Prime Video is set to deliver its latest big swing in the romantic comedy genre with "The Love Hypothesis," an adaptation of a highly anticipated book. The streamer recently dropped the charming trailer for the film, generating excitement and a strong hypothesis for its success.
The central story revolves around Olive, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate who is meticulously focused on her future in academia. However, her plans are complicated when she realizes her best friend, Ahn, has fallen for the same guy Olive likes, Jeremy. In a moment of panic and to prove she has moved on, Olive impulsively kisses the intimidating Professor Adam Carlsen. This desperate act of friendship quickly spirals into a fake relationship, established with clear rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement. As their arrangement unfolds, the lines between their performance and true feelings begin to blur, forcing Olive to confront her most daunting hypothesis yet: that love might actually be worth the risk.
The cast features Lili Reinhart ("Riverdale") as Olive Smith, and Tom Bateman ("Murder on the Orient Express") as Dr. Adam Carlsen. Rachel Marsh ("The Last of Us") plays Ahn, with Nicholas Duvernay ("The White Lotus") as Jeremy. The ensemble also includes Jaboukie Young-White ("Only Murders in the Building") and Arty Froushan ("House of the Dragon"). "The Love Hypothesis" is directed by Claire Scanlon, based on a script by Sarah Rothschild, and produced by Elizabeth Cantillon.
An entertaining detail behind "The Love Hypothesis" is its surprising origin: the story began as Star Wars fan fiction. It was initially inspired by the dynamic relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey. Author Ali Hazelwood later reimagined and reworked the narrative into its own distinct world, but the Star Wars connection remains a significant part of the book’s history. This link becomes particularly amusing when considering the casting: Tom Bateman, who plays Adam Carlsen (a character partly inspired by Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren), is married to Daisy Ridley, who famously portrayed Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Similarly, Lili Reinhart's character, Olive, was influenced by Rey in the earliest versions of the story.
This adaptation also arrives at a time when the future of these beloved Sequel Trilogy characters in the Star Wars universe has been in flux. Daisy Ridley was previously announced to reprise her role as Rey in a new spin-off film, but updates have been stagnant for several years since the firing of its initial writer, Damon Lindelof. Furthermore, news of Adam Driver's fan-favorite villain, Ben Solo (Kylo Ren), being the subject of another prospective spin-off titled "The Hunt for Ben Solo," sparked community outrage before it was ultimately among many Star Wars projects scrapped by Lucasfilm.
"The Love Hypothesis" is scheduled to begin streaming globally on Prime Video on September 23, 2026.
