Star-Studded Cast Joins Fernando Meirelles’ New ‘Art’ Satire!

An upcoming film adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s acclaimed Tony-winning play “Art” is set to bring together a stellar cast, including Oscar nominees Ralph Fiennes, Colin Farrell, and Wagner Moura. These three actors will portray friends caught in a comedic exploration of modern art, the dynamics of friendship, and intellectual pretension. The project is being helmed by Oscar-nominated Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles, known for his work on "City of God," "The Constant Gardener," and "The Two Popes." The screenplay has been adapted by two-time Oscar winner Christopher Hampton, celebrated for his scripts for "Dangerous Liaisons" and "The Father."
The narrative of "Art" centers on three friends—Marc, Serge, and Yvan—whose relationship is tested by the acquisition of a ridiculously expensive, plain white painting by one of them. Their diverging opinions on what truly constitutes ‘art’ ignite a significant conflict within the group, subsequently unearthing long-held grievances and points of tension that have simmered beneath the surface of their friendships. This satirical premise, originated by French playwright Yasmina Reza, has captivated audiences globally since its debut.
Christopher Hampton's involvement marks a significant return to the material, as he previously translated Reza’s original 1994 play for its English-language adaptation three decades ago. That adaptation, directed by Matthew Warchus, premiered in London's West End in 1996, starring celebrated actors Albert Finney, Tom Courtney, and Ken Stott. The enduring popularity of "Art" is further evidenced by its numerous revivals, including a planned Broadway production in 2025 featuring Bobby Cannavale, James Corden, and Neil Patrick Harris.
The film adaptation of "Art" is being produced by Charles Finch, known for "Priscilla," and Tracy Seaward, who produced "The Queen." The project is being launched in the prestigious Cannes market with Patrick Wachsberger’s Legendary-backed 193, while CAA is handling U.S. distribution rights, signaling strong industry interest in this high-profile comedy.
In addition to "Art," 193 has recently boarded another high-profile project: the Western thriller "The Brigands of Rattlecreek." This film will be directed by the acclaimed South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook, celebrated for his distinctive works such as "No Other Choice," "Oldboy," and "The Handmaiden." Park Chan-wook is also adapting the original screenplay written by S. Craig Zahler, known for "Dragged Across Concrete" and "Bone Tomahawk." The cast for "The Brigands of Rattlecreek" features a notable ensemble, including Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Chinese star Tang Wei.
