Stagecoach Rocked by High Winds: Evacuations, Delays & Lainey Wilson's Triumphant Return

The Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, experienced a temporary evacuation on Saturday night, April 25, when strong winds across the Empire Polo Club forced organizers to halt performances and clear the festival grounds. An "emergency evacuation" message appeared on screens and through official app alerts, instructing attendees to move calmly to the nearest exits. This disruption led to significant changes in the evening's lineup, most notably delaying headliner Lainey Wilson's set by about an hour to 10:30 p.m. and leading to the removal of Journey from the bill. Riley Green's scheduled set was also cancelled, and other artists like Pitbull and Gavin Adcock saw their performance times adjusted or cut short.

Despite the challenges, five-time Billboard Country Airplay chart-topper Lainey Wilson delivered a triumphant performance on Stagecoach’s massive Mane Stage. She expressed profound gratitude to the packed crowd for their resilience, stating, "Thank you so much for sticking out the wind." Wilson encouraged the concertgoers, suggesting they might have "sat in y’alls cars for a bit and drank some tequila," before declaring their collective intention to "have a d–n good time, and that’s what we gonna do."

This headlining slot marked a significant milestone for Wilson, contrasting sharply with her early afternoon set on a much smaller stage at Stagecoach in 2022, when she was just starting to earn her first hits. Now, as a two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year winner, she commanded the festival's biggest stage, a testament to her rapid ascent in country music.

Clad in her signature bell bottoms, Wilson's set was a vivid musical spectacle, blending heartfelt ballads and energetic barn burners. She performed a range of songs, including the funky "Ring Finger," the tender "Good Horses Come Home," "Bell Bottoms Up," "Road Runner," "Hang Tight Honey," "Country’s Cool Again," "Somewhere Over Laredo," and the uplifting 2018 track "Dreamcatcher." Her lyrics explored universal themes of love, heartbreak, betrayal, work ethic, and ambition. The stage itself was adorned with a massive horseshoe centerpiece and large cactuses, all bathed in warm, sunny lighting that created a cozy, inviting ambiance against the evening desert sky. Her fiddle player also contributed a beautiful melody of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" before she transitioned into "Somewhere Over Laredo."

One of the evening's highlights was Wilson's impromptu decision to welcome surprise guests to the stage. Recognizing that Riley Green's set had been cancelled due to the evacuation, she brought him and Little Big Town (who had performed earlier) to join her. Wilson asked the crowd if they liked Merle Haggard, to which Green enthusiastically replied, "Oh, yeah!" They then launched into a spirited rendition of Haggard’s 1980 Billboard Hot Country Songs chart-topper "I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink," with Little Big Town lending their superb vocals. Wilson led the audience in a celebratory drink, emphasizing "good times and good country music."

Before Green and Little Big Town exited, Wilson called Green back to center stage, acknowledging the crowd's excitement to see him. Amidst chants of his name, Green performed his 2019 hit "I Wish Grandpas Never Died" with just a guitar, much to the delight of the audience.

Wilson also continued a beloved tradition during her rendition of "Things A Man Oughta Know" by honoring a young girl in the audience as "cowgirl of the night." Welcoming the girl onto the stage, Wilson imparted a powerful message, explaining that being a cowgirl is not about boots or a hat, but "about grit, about fire, about independence, about a girl that can be wild and grounded at the same time." She concluded her show with two of her biggest hits, "4x4xU" and the grit-filled anthem "Heart Like a Truck," thanking the crowd for an unforgettable night and for "making my dreams come true right before my very eyes."
