SHOCKWAVES IN GHANA: NAIMOS Attack Triggers Security Outcry and Legal Battle

A recent attack on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) personnel at Hwidiem has triggered widespread calls for a comprehensive review of operational tactics and launched a high-profile police investigation into the incident. The event, which saw NAIMOS operatives confronted by a mob after apprehending suspected illegal miners, highlights the severe challenges faced by anti-galamsey efforts in Ghana, including hostile elements, political interference, and community resistance.
Following the attack, Security Intelligence Consultant Richard Kumadoe urged NAIMOS leadership to undertake a thorough review of its operational methodologies. He emphasized the critical need for frontline operatives to adopt improved strategic approaches for entering and withdrawing from high-risk environments, thereby minimizing exposure to aggressive bystanders and politically charged interference. Mr. Kumadoe, also a fraud prevention expert, asserted that reassessing these tactics would better safeguard officers, enhance security compliance, and ensure the effective, precise, and safe execution of intelligence duties. He further stressed the importance of close coordination among the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), the Ghana Police Service, and the media to support intelligence-led operations, particularly in politically sensitive areas where resistance to lawful enforcement is common. According to Kumadoe, such collaborative efforts and operational refinements are essential to curtail political interference, ensure preventive security, and ultimately improve efficiency, safety, and public trust in security sector operations.
The incident has also drawn the attention of law enforcement, leading to a police investigation and the involvement of political figures. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, is scheduled to appear at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra on November 4, 2025. This directive from Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno stems from allegations that Mr. Addo arrived at the scene with a group of people demanding the release of detainees after the NAIMOS task force, led by Colonel Dominic Boah, had apprehended several suspects near Bronikrom. During the initial apprehension, police findings indicate that items such as a Smith & Wesson pistol, ammunition, two pistol magazines, an unregistered Range Rover, an unregistered Toyota RAV4, and several mobile phones were seized. While Mr. Addo has strongly denied the allegations, his lawyer confirmed his compliance with the police directive, stating the MP's commitment to the rule of law, public order, and the safety of his constituents, pledging full cooperation with the investigation.
Adding another layer to the discourse, Abdulai Sakra Alhassan, a Communications Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), commended NAIMOS for its unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining despite the violent resistance encountered at Hwidiem. Speaking on Prime Morning News Flash, Mr. Alhassan lauded the institution's
