Shocking Revelation: Nick Lachey Uncovers 98 Degrees' 'Age of Consent' Tour Guide

The new Investigation Discovery docuseries, "Boy Band Confidential," has brought to light striking revelations about the demanding lives of boy band members, with 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey sharing a particularly candid disclosure. Lachey recounted that during the group’s initial touring days, their record label provided them with a comprehensive book detailing the age of consent laws for every state across the United States. This act, described by Lachey as "super shady," was seemingly a precautionary measure, equipping the then-early-to-mid-20s singers with critical legal knowledge to navigate fan interactions on the road and to potentially mitigate legal complications or accusations from individuals aiming to undermine their careers.
The docuseries, which debuted on Investigation Discovery and later became available for streaming on HBO Max, serves as a platform for prominent figures from the boy band era to share their experiences. Featured artists include *NSYNC’s Joey Fatone and Lance Bass, O-Town’s Ashley Parker Angel, Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean, Boyz II Men’s Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman, and LFO’s Brad Fischetti, alongside Lachey. Together, these artists offer an unfiltered perspective into the unique pressures and environments that characterized life within the boy band bubble.
Lachey further drew a stark contrast between the mental health support systems available to artists in the past versus those provided today. He described a culture where prioritizing mental well-being over performance "was not an option." Unlike contemporary artists such as Justin Bieber or Shawn Mendes, who are able to cancel tours for mental health reasons, Lachey and his bandmates—including his younger brother Drew Lachey, Jeff Timmons, and Justin Jeffre—were expected to perform regardless of their personal struggles. Lachey vividly detailed the post-show reality where members might "break down and you cried and you kicked a hole in the wall. Or you did whatever you had to do. But you didn’t bow out." This unwavering expectation stemmed from the immense effort invested in achieving their success, fostering a belief that they "can’t let your foot off the gas."
98 Degrees, renowned for hits such as their Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 collaboration "Thank God I Found You" with Mariah Carey and Joe, and the 2000s No. 2 hit "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)," reached peak popularity between 1998 and 2000. During this period, the band members were typically between 25-27 years old, with Drew Lachey being 22-24. More recently, the group released "Full Circle" last May, their first non-Christmas album in over a decade, which featured updated versions of six of their greatest hits. "Boy Band Confidential," executive produced by Joey Fatone, thus provides a compelling forum for these musical icons to share their extraordinary experiences, illuminating both the glamour and the often-overlooked challenges of life in a boy band.
