Shocking Police Brutality: Officer Filmed Executing Handcuffed Man Sparks Outrage and Arrests in Delta

A disturbing incident of extrajudicial killing in Effurun, Delta State, has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice, with human rights organization Amnesty International urging the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and the Nigeria Police Force to swiftly identify and prosecute the officers responsible. The incident, which reportedly occurred on April 26, 2026, at the Effurun Area Command, involved the alleged shooting death of an unarmed suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.
According to reports, Ogidi was apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition. Despite being handcuffed with his hands tied behind his back and repeatedly pleading for mercy, a police officer identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman allegedly shot him. A disturbing video, shared by Inside_Delta on Instagram and seen by SaharaReporters, captured the helpless young man crying and begging, promising full cooperation: “Officer, I beg, I will tell you everything. It was my friend that deceived me.” Despite his desperate pleas, he was shot in the leg at close range, then again moments later while still restrained and defenceless, leading to his death. Eyewitnesses watched in horror as his cries were ignored.
Amnesty International vehemently condemned the act, questioning the police's role, stating, “When did the police become the jury, judge and executioner?” The organization insisted that the officers implicated must face justice, stressing that such an act constitutes culpable murder under Nigerian law. They also tagged relevant police accountability channels, including the Complaint Response Unit, demanding immediate action and transparency.
Similarly, activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who posted the video on X, described the act as a “live execution” and called for an immediate and thorough investigation. Gwamnishu highlighted the victim's helplessness, emphasizing that he was restrained, unarmed, not fighting or running, but begging for a chance to explain or prove his innocence. The activist questioned the potential fabrication of a narrative, such as placing a gun beside the lifeless body to label the victim an “Armed Robber,” and underscored that a dead man cannot defend himself.
In response to the outcry, the Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrest and transfer of ASP Nuhu Usman to Abuja for disciplinary action. In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, it was noted that the officer has been moved to the Force Headquarters to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution. The Command clarified that police operatives were deployed to take the suspect into custody following credible intelligence, but ASP Nuhu Usman, leading the team, acted “in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force,” discharging his firearm and causing the suspect’s death.
Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, immediately ordered the officer's arrest, issued a formal query, and subsequently transferred him for further action. CP Oyeniyi strongly condemned the killing, extended condolences to the bereaved family, and assured them of the Command's full commitment to ensuring justice is served. He appealed to the public to remain calm, reiterating the Delta State Police Command’s dedication to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.
