Shock Waves Hit 'Bachelorette' Franchise as ABC Pulls Controversial Season

ABC has announced the abrupt cancellation of the upcoming season of "The Bachelorette," a decision made hours after a video surfaced online depicting a 2023 domestic dispute involving the season's lead, Taylor Frankie Paul, and her ex-boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen.
This move has sent shockwaves through "Bachelor Nation," prompting significant reactions from former contestants and raising serious questions about the franchise's vetting processes.
Former "Bachelorette" lead, Rachel Lindsay, expressed visible shock and dismay upon hearing the news during a recording of the "Bachelor Party" podcast.
Lindsay, a prominent figure in the franchise, commented, "I think it's over. I was trying to think of a scenario where it could be different. Because this isn't just, 'Oh, we put it all on a person. This person did this.' This is the system that allowed this to happen."
She further asserted that the names "Bachelorette" and "Bachelor" are now "tainted" and "completely destroyed," questioning how the franchise can regain trust, especially after Paul's involvement despite her previous public history.
Lindsay also highlighted the unfortunate consequence of many people losing their jobs in an already challenging industry, emphasizing the need for accountability for those who failed to vet Paul adequately.
The leaked footage, published by TMZ, shows Paul throwing metal stools at Mortensen while one of her children was present.
This incident refers to a past event from 2023, where Paul was arrested for allegedly hitting, choking, and throwing chairs at Mortensen before their son was born, and she later pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault, with other charges including domestic violence in the presence of a child, child abuse, and criminal mischief being dismissed.
While the police report was public and Paul was on probation, the video itself had not been publicly released until recently.
This past incident was also discussed in the first season of "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives," a Hulu reality show where Paul gained prominence as a founding member of the #MomTok group, and it had caused a delay in that show's production.
Adding to the complexity, the cancellation of "The Bachelorette" came just three days after production on Season 5 of "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" was paused due to new allegations of domestic violence from both Paul and Mortensen.
The timing underscores a pattern of ongoing issues surrounding Paul's personal life.
Multiple contestants from Paul's now-canceled season of "The Bachelorette" have publicly addressed the situation.
Doug Mason, 28, expressed sympathy for Paul, stating, "I'm just sending out prayers to Taylor, because that was her moment and her moment was blocked."
Other contestants, including Brandon Perce, Malik Evans, Johnnie LaRossa, and Matthew Carroll, offered brief statements acknowledging the situation and thanking supporters, often reflecting a sense of disappointment but also gratitude for the experience.
