Shock Parenting Method: Parents Defend Forcing Son to Do Squats for Being Naughty

Dustin, 35, and Katie Maletich, 32, from Oregon, have ignited a fierce online debate after their unique parenting method, involving physical exercise as punishment for their nine-year-old son, Tommy, went viral on TikTok. The couple defended their approach, asserting it’s a form of 'tough love' and a way to instill accountability.
The incident that sparked the controversy was captured by an at-home camera. Tommy was seen arguing with his mother, Katie, over using her phone. When Katie told him to stop, Tommy retorted, 'OK, chill.' This remark immediately caught the attention of his father, Dustin, who, unamused, challenged Tommy: 'Did you just tell your mum to chill?' Without hesitation, Dustin instructed his son to begin doing push-ups. Tommy complied, performing ten before attempting to stop, claiming he couldn't do more. However, Dustin pushed him to continue, ultimately having Tommy complete 20 push-ups, followed by a demanding 60 squats.
After the strenuous exercise, Dustin addressed Tommy, emphasizing the importance of respect: 'Do we tell mum to 'chill out'? Absolutely not. I wouldn't let anybody else talk to her like that so you don't get to talk to her like that.' Tommy then apologized to his mother, and the video concluded with Dustin telling his son, 'I love you,' followed by a comforting hug. Katie shared the footage on TikTok under the username @raisingmaletich, captioning it: 'I will never stop being grateful to be raising kids with a real man who knows how to be a father, especially to his boys. This is masculinity.'
The video, which garnered over 1.4 million views, quickly divided audiences. While many applauded Dustin’s disciplinary method, praising it as a form of 'tough love' that holds children accountable, others strongly criticized the couple for using physical activity as punishment. Comments ranged from appreciation for encouraging resilience and discipline to disagreement with the use of exercise in this context.
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Katie and Dustin clarified their stance. Dustin explained that the physical exertion was 'not something exceptionally difficult for him because we all workout together as a family for fun several times a week and he is used to this sort of exertion.' He noted Tommy's immediate remorse and that the moment 'ended with love.' Dustin believes the physical exercise helps Tommy 'refocus when he feels that he doesn’t have control over his body and mind which always makes him more reception to healthy communication.'
The couple expressed surprise at the video's viral reaction, having viewed it as a 'tender parenting moment.' Dustin revealed that this 'corrective parenting moment' held particular significance for Katie, who grew up in a home with 'a lot of toxicity, emotionally reactive parenting, yelling and anger,' and felt 'inspired' by their approach. Addressing the backlash, Dustin asserted that every parent has the right to raise their children as they 'see fit,' provided there is no intentional harm. Their ultimate goal, he stated, is to raise Tommy as a 'healthy, happy, resilient and respectful human.'
