Shailene Woodley Reveals Devastating 'Paradise' Scene with Sterling K. Brown

Paradise Season 2 has delivered another emotional impact, especially in Episode 4, which contains major spoilers.
The Former Secret Service Agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) finds himself in a desperate situation after a plane crash, dealing with a reaggravated knee injury and the urgent need to reach Atlanta to reunite with his wife, Teri.
He eventually forms an alliance with Annie Clay (Shailene Woodley), a former Graceland tour guide and med student who initially has her own conditions for helping him.
At first, Annie is determined that Xavier follow her plan to reunite with Link (Thomas Doherty) in Colorado.
But when the road ahead proves uncertain, she lets him take the lead, and together they begin the journey toward Atlanta.
Along the way, tragedy strikes as Annie goes into labor and gave birth to a baby girl, but in a heartbreaking turn, she passes away in Xavier’s arms.
With her final breath, she entrusts him with a sacred mission: to bring their daughter to Colorado, so she can meet the father who doesn’t even know she exists.
Collider had the opportunity to speak up about the new faces and familiar favorites of the show to get their take on some of Season 2’s most unforgettable moments, starting with the premiere episodes featuring Shailene Woodley and Thomas Doherty.
Woodley, stepping into the spotlight as Annie, the character at the heart of the season opener, revealed she felt surprisingly at ease despite the weight of the role.
After being casted, she dove headfirst into understanding Annie and her bonds with Link, her dynamics with Sterling.
She also found herself crafting “something so wildly different” from Season 1, describing the episode almost like a “short film in and of itself.”
Annie and Link’s whirlwind romance may have been brief, but it burned with intensity.
Shailene Woodley and Thomas Doherty reflected on whether their connection was fate or simply a product of circumstance, and both leaned toward destiny.
He pointed out that after three years on the run, both characters had built walls around their hearts, guarding themselves from pain and losing touch with their humanity.
When meeting each other, they shattered those defenses, revealing what he called a “pure love.”
She added that the film’s tender moments were not just about fear or grief but also about laughter, joy, and playful intimacy.
In the midst of life or death stakes, she said, the characters’ moments of silliness and relief made their bond feel human, alive, and unforgettable.
Woodley opened up about the heart-wrenching “holy charge” scene where Annie meets her end, calling it one of the most emotional moments of her career.
The intensity was heightened by the trust and bond she had built with Sterling K. Brown, making every reaction feel raw and authentic.
The scene was a whirlwind of feelings such as pain and joy of childbirth intertwined with the bittersweet reality of life ending as another begins.
Woodley described the “holy charge” as deeply spiritual, a moment that captures the essence of Paradise: reflecting on human purpose and the choices we make in the fleeting time we have. As she put it,
“Life is long… until it’s not, and what we do with that time is a choice we make every single day.”
Regarding Thomas Doherty's character, Link, many questions remain, including mysterious flashbacks and Xavier's inexplicable recognition of him.
Doherty remained secretive about Link's ultimate agenda and the reason behind Xavier's past encounter with him, promising a "jaw-dropping" revelation for fans.
The new episodes of "Paradise" Season 2 premiere Mondays on Hulu.
