Scarlett Johansson Stands Firm: Star Doubles Down on Woody Allen Support

Scarlett Johansson has publicly reaffirmed her unwavering support for filmmaker Woody Allen, a stance that sets her apart from much of the film industry, which has largely disavowed him. Johansson, who has starred in three of Allen's films — "Match Point," "Scoop," and "Vicky Christina Barcelona" — remains one of the few prominent figures to openly stand by the director amidst ongoing sexual abuse allegations.
The allegations against Allen were initially made by his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow, in 1992, and resurfaced with renewed intensity in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Allen has consistently denied these claims, which were also investigated and subsequently dismissed by New York authorities. In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johansson explicitly stated her belief in Allen, declaring, "I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work him anytime."
Addressing the potential repercussions of her outspoken support in a recent interview with The Daily Telegraph, the Marvel star admitted it was "hard to know" if she had experienced any professional or personal fallout. She reflected on her mother's enduring advice, which encouraged her to embrace her true self, maintain integrity, and advocate for her convictions, noting, "You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in.”
Johansson further elaborated on her evolving understanding of public discourse, emphasizing the importance of discernment. “At the same time, I think it’s also important to know when it’s not your turn. I don’t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it’s just not your time. And that’s something I’ve understood more as I’ve matured,” she explained, suggesting a thoughtful approach to engaging in public discussions.
Beyond her defense of Allen, Johansson has demonstrated a willingness to speak out on other significant issues impacting her career and the broader industry. She recently raised objections to ChatGPT's launch of a voice that she contended bore an "eerily similar" resemblance to her own. Prior to that, in 2021, she notably sued Disney over its decision to release "Black Widow" exclusively via streaming, a move she argued affected her compensation.
In discussing these various stances, Johansson also expressed a desire for more collective action within the industry. She remarked on the perceived lack of vocal, public support from her peers on issues that affect the entire community, stating, “I mean, it would be great to have more support from the community and my peers — vocally, publicly — on certain issues that affect the entire industry. It’s always helpful to have more voices, you guys!” Her comments highlight a call for greater solidarity among actors and professionals in addressing shared concerns.
