Royal Confession: Prince Harry Reveals Diana's Impact, Quits Royal Life in Shocking Speech
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, concluded their emotional visit to Melbourne with significant revelations and engagements, drawing attention to personal struggles, mental health advocacy, and the pervasive impact of social media.
During his address at the InterEdge Summit at Melbourne Park, a high-profile event with tickets costing $997, Prince Harry made a candid admission to Australian business leader Brendan Nelson. He confessed that he never wanted to be a working royal, stating, "After my mum died just before my 13th birthday – I was like: 'I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role – wherever this is headed, I don’t like it.' It killed my mum, and I was very much against it, and I stuck my head in the sand for years and years." He elaborated on his eventual change of perspective, realizing he could use his platform and resources to make a difference, guided by what his mother, Princess Diana, would have wanted. Harry also shared that he had felt "lost, betrayed, or completely powerless" at various points in his life, emphasizing that while his experiences might be unusual, the feelings of loss are universal. All proceeds from the InterEdge Summit were designated for Lifeline.
Prince Harry used his summit speech to critically address social media companies, asserting that many platforms are not built around human well-being and are not designed with safety in mind. He highlighted the contradiction that these companies can target young people with "extraordinary precision" but claim it's "too difficult, too complex" to protect them. Harry praised Australia's social media ban for teenagers as "epic," noting it was the first country to implement such a measure, although he believes it should have never reached a point where a ban was necessary.
Adding to the day's emotional disclosures, Meghan Markle, 41, revealed her decade-long struggle with aggressive online bullying. Speaking during a circle discussion on social media and mental health at the Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Program, Batyr, located on the grounds of Swinburne University, she stated, "Every day for 10 years, I have been bullied and attacked. And I was the most trolled person in the entire world." The Duchess further commented that technology companies are "not incentivised to stop" such online harassment.
The couple's engagements in Melbourne included a visit to the Koorie Heritage Trust Birrarung Building at Federation Square for the Scar Tree Walk, where they were greeted by traditional owners. Meghan sported a casual look, including a t-shirt emblazoned with 'Mama', designed by her close friend Kelly McKee Zajfen, with sales supporting young parents in foster care. Prince Harry shared heartwarming moments during the walk, particularly with red-haired children, telling three-year-old Heidi and a boy at the Royal Children's Hospital, "Gingers rule!" Later at the Batyr program, Meghan changed into a khaki shift dress by Friends with Frank, paired with black stiletto heels and simple gold rings, notably accessorizing with the priceless Cartier Tank Française watch believed to have belonged to Princess Diana. The Duchess expressed her fondness for Australia, remarking, "Oh gosh, I'd love to come back. It's brilliant."
Beyond their public appearances, Meghan Markle has ventured into the business of fashion, becoming a participant and investor in OneOff, an AI-powered fashion website. This platform allows her to promote the outfits worn during her Australian tour, such as a $1,250 Karen Gee 'Priscilla' dress and $780 'Puffy Hearts' stud earrings by Real Fine Studio. The site features photos of Meghan with options to buy her clothing, aiming to ensure designers receive proper credit. Her wardrobe choices for the tour also included a $1,000 St Agni suede jacket, an $890 matching skirt, and Aquazzura pumps. Furthermore, Meghan is set to guest star on the new season of MasterChef Australia, an announcement that garnered significant attention from fans.
The Duke and Duchess's visit was not without its lighter or more unusual moments. Channel 7 reporter Paul Dowsley caused a stir by attempting to snap a selfie with Prince Harry at the Scar Tree Walk, leading to an awkward interaction where Harry reportedly prodded him out of the way, though Dowsley later claimed the interaction was good-humoured and Harry complimented his tie. Separately, a Beachside Bakehouse in San Remo stirred controversy by posting an AI-generated image of Harry and Meghan at their café. The image was widely criticized online for its inauthenticity and lack of alignment with the couple's itinerary, with some netizens pointing out inaccuracies like Harry having "less hair" in the AI depiction. Despite some negative reactions, the bakehouse owner Emily reported an "overwhelmingly positive" response, with the post sparking community engagement and visibility for their business.
