Robyn Breaks Silence: Unleashes 'Dopamine,' First New Track in Seven Years

Swedish dance pop titan Robyn has unveiled her first new solo single in seven years, titled “Dopamine.” Released on Wednesday, November 12, via Jamie xx’s Young label, the track is characterized as a soaring, sparkling, and sophisticated dancefloor anthem. Robyn collaborated with longtime partner Klas Åhlund on the production of “Dopamine,” which is accompanied by a striking video directed by London-based photographer Marili Andre.
Robyn explains that “Dopamine” serves as a commentary on how modern culture often interprets emotions through biological data derived from our devices. She notes the widespread practice of monitoring heart rates and attempting to decode emotions based on hormones and chemical substances within the body. Robyn articulates a perceived societal drive to transcend our humanity by explaining every aspect of our existence, suggesting that this pursuit of definitive answers can be both insightful and problematic.
The artist delves into the “doubleness” of the song’s title, referring to the experience of a profound, intense, and either enjoyable or painful emotion, while simultaneously acknowledging it as a mere biological process. She advocates for accepting this duality without resorting to rigid adherence to either religion or science, emphasizing the ability to navigate between these perspectives.
Although “Dopamine” marks Robyn’s first solo release since her 2018 album *Honey*, she has maintained a significant presence in the dance music world through various collaborations. These include the 2020 track “Impact” with SG Lewis and Channel Tres, her vocal contributions to “Life” on Jamie xx’s 2024 album *In Waves*, and her appearance on the remixed version of Charli XCX’s “360” from 2024’s *Brat*. Additionally, Robyn made headlines in February with her performance alongside David Byrne at the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, where she delivered her iconic 2010 classic “Dancing On My Own.” In March, Billboard recognized “Dancing On My Own” as the 17th best dance song of all time.
