Rivers State Showdown: Wike Battles Critics as APC Sweeps LG Polls, Amidst Fraud Allegations

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed a sweeping victory in the Rivers State local government elections held on Saturday, securing 20 out of 23 chairmanship seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to win the remaining three. The results have been met with both jubilation from the APC and widespread condemnation from opposition parties, civil society groups, and political commentators.
Election Results: A Divided Response

The APC heralded the outcome as a reflection of the true wishes of Rivers voters. According to Hon. Tony Okocha, Caretaker Committee Chairman of Rivers APC, the elections were peaceful and demonstrated the electorate’s overwhelming confidence in the party.
However, the PDP and other opposition figures have outrightly rejected the results, describing the entire exercise as unconstitutional and illegitimate. The state PDP publicity secretary, Mr. Sydney Gbara, labeled the elections a “sham” and vowed to explore “all legal and political means to challenge this daylight robbery.” The tension between the ruling APC and opposition parties underscores the growing political divide in Rivers State.

The elections were held under a Sole Administrator, a position widely contested for its unconstitutional status. This has been the core of the opposition’s criticism.
Former Vice President and 2023 PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, condemned the elections and urged people to reject the results.
Similarly, former Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, described the polls as “a desecration of democaracy” stating, “The people of Rivers have been denied their right to choose. Illegality can never produce legitimacy.”
These strong condemnations highlight the broader concern that the elections were not just flawed but represent a serious undermining of democratic governance and the rule of law in Nigeria.
Civil Society and Analysts Join the Outcry
Civil society organizations such as the CDD have also voiced alarm. Analysts point to the elections as emblematic of the tension between legality and political expediency in local governance. Reports indicated low voter turnout, with many residents reportedly disengaged or disillusioned by the process. Opposition leaders interpreted this apathy as a sign of declining faith in the electoral system, whereas APC leaders maintained that the turnout was consistent with typical local election patterns nationwide.
Legal Battles and Future Political Implications
The controversy surrounding the Rivers local government elections is expected to escalate into a legal showdown. Opposition figures are calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary to intervene and restore confidence in the electoral process.
The election outcome and subsequent disputes not only have immediate ramifications for Rivers State but also carry broader implications for Nigeria’s democratic governance. Control over local governments is vital for political parties as it impacts grassroots influence and shapes future state and federal elections.
As the APC consolidates power at the local government level, the PDP and other opposition forces are gearing up to challenge what they view as a precedent that threatens democratic norms.
Conclusion: A Victory Marred by Controversy
The APC’s success in winning 20 of 23 chairmanship seats in Rivers State is a significant political milestone for the party. The results are being touted by APC leaders as evidence of public confidence in their governance and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Yet, the backlash from opposition leaders, civil society groups, and political analysts underscores a deep crisis of legitimacy. The constitutional questions raised by the role of the Sole Administrator, allegations of electoral malpractice, and low voter engagement paint a complex picture of a democracy under strain.
