OSPAC Commander, Three Women Killed in Gunmen's Attack in Rivers Community

Four people, including a commander of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), were killed on Tuesday after gunmen opened fire in Omoku, Rivers State.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the attack, identifying the slain OSPAC commander as Ozomela Stephen Nwaocha. According to police, the incident occurred while he was with his sister and another woman near his residence when the attackers struck.

Three women were killed during the attack, while two other victims sustained gunshot injuries and are receiving treatment.

Community Thrown Into Panic

The shooting triggered panic across Omoku, with businesses and markets shutting down as residents fled to nearby communities over fears of further violence.

OSPAC's Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, Nkem Godknows, said the attack happened shortly after 5 p.m., adding that the victims died at the scene before emergency responders arrived.

Police Launch Investigation

In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer ASP Grace Iringe-Koko on behalf of the command, Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju condemned the killings, describing them as a serious threat to the peace enjoyed in the state.

The command said investigations have begun and assured residents that those responsible would be identified, arrested and prosecuted.

Call for Stronger Security Collaboration

The police also urged community-based security groups and vigilante organisations across Rivers State to work more closely with law enforcement through their respective Divisional Police Officers and Area Commanders.

According to the command, improved coordination is necessary to strengthen security operations and reduce the risk faced by local security volunteers while carrying out their duties.

Residents were encouraged to provide useful information that could assist investigators, with police assuring the public that all credible tips would be treated confidentially.

OSPAC Seeks Greater Support

Reacting to the incident, OSPAC spokesperson Nkem Godknows appealed for calm and called on the government and well-meaning Nigerians to provide greater support for members of the local security outfit.

He said many personnel continue to operate under difficult conditions, raising concerns about welfare and the resources available to community security groups working alongside law enforcement.

The Rivers State Government has repeatedly stated its commitment to improving security across the state through collaboration between security agencies and local stakeholders.
