Rivers Crisis Deepens: Tinubu Holds Emergency Talks with Fubara, Wike

The protracted political crisis gripping Rivers State appears to be nearing a resolution, largely due to a series of high-level interventions by President Bola Tinubu. The President has reportedly met with key political figures from the state on multiple occasions, with the latest intervention taking place late Sunday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
This recent crucial meeting, confirmed by reliable presidency sources, involved President Tinubu, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, alongside other prominent political leaders from the state. The discussions, which occurred around 11 pm at the president’s official residence, were a decisive move to address the escalating tensions over leadership recognition within the state and stalled plans by lawmakers to impeach the governor.
This marks approximately the fourth time President Tinubu has stepped in to mediate the prolonged political standoff between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike. The interventions aim to de-escalate the volatile situation and foster reconciliation among the state’s political leadership, which has been a significant challenge in the oil-rich state.
While the official outcome of the latest meeting was not publicly disclosed, reports circulating suggest significant progress. Governor Fubara was reported to have accompanied Minister Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, following the meeting. Furthermore, Governor Fubara reportedly appealed to the minister, pledging to uphold mutual respect. Observers view these gestures as crucial steps towards easing the political friction.
Amid these efforts, President Tinubu reportedly urged Governor Fubara, identified as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to recognize his predecessor, Nyesom Wike – a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member serving as a minister in the APC-led federal government – as the party’s leader in Rivers State. This directive underscores the intricate political dynamics at play and the President's commitment to achieving a lasting peace in the state.
