Quantum Computing Readiness: Startup's Bold Vision for Future Enterprises

Eighteen months after the acquisition of his startup by chipmaker AMD for $665 million, Finnish entrepreneur Peter Sarlin has transitioned from his role as CEO of the AMD Silo AI unit. Sarlin is now actively involved as chairman in two new ventures: NestAI, a dedicated physical AI lab, and QuTwo, an innovative AI startup poised to assist companies in navigating and preparing for the emerging era of quantum computing.
QuTwo, currently financed entirely by Sarlin’s family office, PostScriptum, positions itself as “an AI lab for the quantum era.” Rather than passively awaiting the full maturation of quantum computing, QuTwo is proactively engaging with enterprise clients. One notable collaboration is with European fashion retailer Zalando, where they are jointly developing what are termed “lifestyle agents.” These advanced AI tools are designed to extend beyond conventional product search, instead proactively suggesting personalized products and experiences to consumers.
The foundational premise of QuTwo is the recognition that artificial intelligence is increasingly confronting an efficiency ceiling, a challenge that quantum computing holds the potential to alleviate. However, Sarlin clarified to TechCrunch that the company is not making speculative bets on the exact timeline for quantum computing's widespread readiness. Instead, QuTwo is focused on developing QuTwo OS, an sophisticated orchestration layer engineered to enable companies to seamlessly transition from classical to quantum computing paradigms, integrating hybrid computing solutions along this transformative path.
Sarlin's investment philosophy, channeled through PostScriptum, includes stakes in prominent Finnish quantum companies like IQM and QMill. He belongs to a growing cohort of investors who firmly believe that quantum computing will, in time, significantly outperform classical computers across a diverse array of industrial applications, simultaneously mitigating AI's substantial energy demands. Nevertheless, Sarlin also postulates that the initial practical applications will necessitate mixed hardware environments. In this context, QuTwo OS aims to abstract the complexities of routing and resource management, allowing enterprises to concentrate on their core business challenges.
A significant interim advantage lies in the realm of “quantum-inspired” computing. This approach is already viable today, as it leverages classical hardware to simulate quantum behavior, effectively circumventing the technical hurdles that continue to impede the development and widespread adoption of true quantum hardware. Concurrently, QuTwo OS is meticulously designed for maximum flexibility, ensuring compatibility with both quantum and non-quantum algorithms and a variety of chip architectures.
The QuTwo team boasts a wealth of experience spanning both sides of the quantum-AI divide. On the quantum front, the expertise includes IQM cofounder Kuan Yen Tan and board member Antti Vasara, who also chairs SemiQon, a Finnish semiconductor startup specializing in quantum chips. The enterprise AI dimension is robustly represented by Sarlin himself and Kaj-Mikael Björk, one of his former cofounders from Silo AI. Further bolstering the leadership, Pekka Lundmark, the former CEO of Finnish telecom giant Nokia, has also joined QuTwo’s board. Collectively, the team comprises over 30 quantum and AI scientists, underscoring the company’s strong technical foundation. Sarlin unequivocally states the company's strategic position: “We’re building for the quantum world, but QuTwo is an AI company,” signifying that QuTwo's core mission is to facilitate the migration of AI workloads from classical to quantum computing environments.
This strategic focus on pushing AI workloads to quantum platforms implies a potentially broad customer base. Beyond its partnership with Zalando, QuTwo has also initiated a joint quantum AI research endeavor with OP Pohjola, a major Finnish financial services provider. From its inception, QuTwo has adopted a commercially oriented approach, already securing
