Putin's Stark Warning: Europe on Brink of War Amid Threats
The fifth episode of Euronews' new debating show, "The Ring," offered a rare and engaging glimpse into the European Parliament chamber, broadcast directly from Brussels. This edition featured a compelling discussion between two Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) with sharply contrasting political ideologies: liberal Irish MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú of Renew Europe and conservative Romanian MEP Cristian Terheș of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group.
Despite their differing political views, Ní Mhurchú and Terheș found notable common ground on the European Union’s critical role in helping to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. One of the central themes of the debate was the EU’s level of preparedness and its overall strategic approach to the war.
Cristian Terheș articulated a firm position, stressing what he sees as the urgent need for the EU to strengthen its defence capabilities and proactively prepare for potential conflict. He invoked a vivid analogy, stating, “If you project power, Russia is not going to attack you. Russia is like a bear. A bear is going to attack a weak animal.” Terheș further criticized the EU’s earlier actions regarding support for Ukraine, insisting that more decisive and timely intervention “should have been done more and (acted) sooner.”
Responding to Terheș’s criticisms, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú strongly defended the European Union’s diplomatic efforts, particularly those led by Kaja Kallas. Ní Mhurchú countered by saying, “I don't accept any criticism. Kaja Kallas may not be seen in pictures, but I'm not depending on her being seen in pictures. I'm depending on her and her team negotiating hard, and they have been doing that. They didn't withdraw.” Her response underscored the intense, behind-the-scenes diplomacy that Kallas and her team have been conducting throughout the crisis.
“The Ring” is expertly anchored by Méabh Mc Mahon, with production credits going to Luis Albertos Altarejos, Nikos Michos, and Amaia Echevarria, and editing led by Zacharia Vigneron.
