Prime Video's 'Heated Rivalry' Stuns Viewers With Explosive Season 1 Finale Twist

Prime Video has recently launched its new hockey romance series, "Off Campus," based on Elle Kennedy's popular novel series. The show, set in the fictional Briar University where hockey is paramount, follows the lives of four star players: Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli), John Logan (Antonio Cipriano), Dean Di Lauretis (Stephen Kalyn), and John Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks). These athletes are not only top players but also highly popular figures on campus. Actors Antonio Cipriano, Stephen Kalyn, and Jalen Thomas Brooks recently shared insights into the physically demanding roles and what it took to bring their characters to life.
The trio delved into their experiences with hockey training for the series. Stephen Kalyn, who grew up playing hockey in Toronto, Canada, since age six, found the experience natural. However, Jalen Thomas Brooks and Antonio Cipriano began with little to no prior experience, undergoing a rigorous two-week boot camp before filming, with ongoing training sessions. They were trained by Dave Tomlinson, a Vancouver Canuck Hall of Famer, with Brooks jokingly admitting their initial performance on the ice was "horrible" before significant improvement.
The actors also light-heartedly discussed the preparation required for the numerous shirtless scenes in the show. While Stephen Kalyn maintains an active lifestyle, he humorously mentioned relying on the makeup team for assistance, stating they do "a great job giving us all a six-pack." Jalen Thomas Brooks corroborated this, revealing his surprise at seeing the results on camera after shading and coloring techniques were applied on set.
Stephen Kalyn provided details on Dean Di Lauretis's storyline, noting his excitement for exploring Dean's character more in a B-plotline alongside Allie (Mika Abdalla). He highlighted the episode "The Breakaway," which diverges from the main Garrett and Hannah narrative to offer a different scenario. Kalyn also teased a significant twist involving Hunter (Charlie Evans) in the Season 1 finale, hinting at a past connection that might involve Dean's sister, with further developments awaiting future scripts.
Antonio Cipriano spoke about John Logan's arc, confirming that Logan's unrequited crush on Hannah, a prominent element in the books, is a significant part of his struggle in the series. He expressed anticipation for Logan's journey of overcoming this and finding "real love" in a future storyline, specifically mentioning a potential romance with Grace in Season 2.
Jalen Thomas Brooks shared his eagerness to explore John Tucker's story in Season 2, focusing on his self-discovery, evolving role on the hockey team, family dynamics, and college life. He also reflected on the challenges of his dual roles, comparing the physical demands of playing hockey in "Off Campus" to the mental intensity and long days on "The Pitt." Brooks concluded that while both had their difficulties, hockey became more enjoyable due to the cast, yet it was physically more exhausting than his work on "The Pitt."
Finally, the actors revealed the songs they associated with their characters. Stephen Kalyn chose "Girls, Girls, Girls" by Mötley Crüe and "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard for Dean, seeing them as anthems for his confidence. Antonio Cipriano, prepping for Season 2, selected "Surrender" by Cheap Trick for Logan, envisioning it as his auto shop working song. Jalen Thomas Brooks picked "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" for John Tucker.
