Preventive Measures: Liberia Races to Prevent Ebola Resurgence
The Government of Liberia, through its Ministry of Health (MoH) and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), has swiftly implemented stringent new health and travel measures to enhance surveillance for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). This decisive action comes in response to recent EVD outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, both of which have been officially declared Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEICs).
Acknowledging the rapid propagation of the disease, Liberia has activated intensified EVD public health protocols across all its points of entry, including airports, land crossings, and seaports. These new protocols complement existing regulations that comply with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005). To formalize these measures, the Government of Liberia issued EVD Travel Advisory No. 01 on May 25, 2026, which took immediate effect.
Under the provisions of this advisory, all individuals either arriving from or transiting through the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Uganda are now mandated to accurately complete a Traveler's Surveillance Form. This form must be filled out either while onboard their conveyance or upon their arrival at a Liberian point of entry. Furthermore, comprehensive health screening procedures, notably body temperature checks, will be conducted for all incoming travelers at every point of entry.
Any passenger exhibiting suspected signs or symptoms of EVD or any other infectious disease will be managed meticulously in strict adherence to the National Point of Entry Standard Operating Procedures. Beyond the initial screening, all travelers will receive vital health information and explicit advice to diligently self-monitor for any signs or symptoms of EVD or other infectious diseases. They are instructed to report any such observations immediately to the nearest health facility or by calling the designated toll-free number 4455. The Liberian government has also strongly urged all travelers and conveyance operators to rigorously observe Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures. These critical measures include consistent and thorough handwashing, the regular use of hand sanitizers, and consciously avoiding unnecessary physical contact to minimize transmission risks.
The specific EVD outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda has been identified as being linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola Virus Disease. This particular outbreak was officially declared in May 2026, following the detection of several clusters of unexplained hemorrhagic fever cases in the eastern region of the DRC, particularly within the conflict-affected province of Ituri. This declaration underscored the urgent need for heightened international and national preparedness, prompting Liberia's proactive stance.
