President Mahama's Landmark 2026 SONA: Promises, Protests & Power Plays!

President John Dramani Mahama delivered his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Friday, February 27, marking his second such address since returning to office. The President used the occasion to review his administration's performance, outline plans for the year ahead, and address key national challenges.
In his address, President Mahama underscored Ghana's resilience and its journey towards renewal, urging citizens to actively participate in shaping the nation's future. He asserted that Ghana's strength lies in its people's refusal to surrender to trials, calling for unity of purpose among all segments of society, from farmers and traders to parliamentarians and youth. He emphasized that the country's renewal must be built into its institutions, economy, and the ethics passed down to future generations, stressing that civic duty is indispensable for national development. The President also highlighted his commitment to supporting media, announcing plans to revitalize state-owned media houses and reconsider the Media Development Fund, while urging security agencies to be accommodating towards journalists.
Beyond national concerns, President Mahama called upon African nations to assert greater control over their own development and global standing, advocating for a continent that actively shapes its destiny. He outlined four critical pillars for achieving this vision: unlocking youth potential, strengthening regional value chains to add value to raw materials, mobilizing domestic capital to reduce reliance on external aid, and speaking with one coordinated voice in global affairs to protect Africa's interests.
The delivery of the SONA was immediately followed by a spirited 'clash' on the floor of Parliament. The Majority caucus, predominantly clad in white, rose to chant
