Premier League Shocker: Bruno Fernandes Crowned Player of the Season!
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been crowned the Premier League Player of the Season, a prestigious award he has won for the first time in his career. The 31-year-old Portugal international also previously secured the FWA Footballer of the Year award, marking a season of significant individual recognition. Fernandes triumphed over a strong field of nominees, including David Raya, Gabriel, and Declan Rice of Arsenal; Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo of Manchester City; Igor Thiago of Brentford; and Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest.
Fernandes' season has been statistically impressive, as he equalled the long-standing Premier League record for assists in a single campaign, matching the 20 assists previously set by legends Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. He also contributed eight goals throughout the season. With one final game remaining against Brighton, Fernandes has the opportunity to potentially break this assist record, further solidifying his place in Premier League history. His contributions were vital in Manchester United securing a third-place finish in the league, thereby qualifying for the Champions League.
This individual accolade for Fernandes marks a notable achievement for Manchester United, as he is the first player from the club to win the Premier League Player of the Season award since Nemanja Matic in the 2010-11 season. He joins an elite list of former United players who have received this honor, including Peter Schmeichel, Dwight Yorke, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Wayne Rooney.
In related news, Manchester City's emerging talent, Nico O'Reilly, was recognized with the Young Player of the Season award. O'Reilly's impactful performances, characterized by crucial goals, established him as a key figure for City this season and earned him a well-deserved spot in England's World Cup squad.
Despite Fernandes' on-field successes and record-equalling feats, his pursuit of the assist record has drawn sharp criticism from former Manchester United captain Roy Keane. Speaking on The Overlap, Keane expressed his outrage over what he perceived as a self-centered mindset, particularly after hearing Fernandes' post-match comments.
