Political Quake: Kano Governor Poised to Join APC?

Intensifying speculation surrounds the potential defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This conjecture has been fueled by public declarations made by several of his aides and local government party leaders, openly expressing their support for such a move and their alignment with the APC.
The unfolding political drama has ignited considerable debate within Kano State's political landscape, particularly focusing on whether any such defection would receive the crucial approval of Governor Yusuf’s political mentor and the revered leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Despite the swirling rumors and public statements, Governor Yusuf himself has refrained from issuing any official statement on the matter, leaving the political community in anticipation.
A significant development contributing to the speculation was a viral video circulated on Sunday, featuring Governor Yusuf’s Director of Protocol, Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo. In the video, Rogo unequivocally announced that political stakeholders within Rogo Local Government Area had collectively resolved to follow the governor to the APC. Flanked by other party leaders from the area, Rogo articulated that key figures within the Kwankwasiyya movement in the local government had reached a consensus: both Senator Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf should defect to the APC. This decision, according to Rogo, was deemed to be in the best interest of the people.
Rogo further elaborated on the resolution, stating, "We at Rogo Local Government, under the leadership of Speaker Jibrin Ismail Falgore, myself, the council chairman, caucus leaders, elders, women and youth leaders, have resolved that Kwankwaso is our leader, and that he and Governor Yusuf should take us to APC." He underscored that this resolution was rooted in the best interests of the populace, the nation, and Senator Kwankwaso’s political future, emphasizing an agreement among stakeholders to eschew divisive and abusive politics. Rogo affirmed their unwavering loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya ideology but maintained that joining the APC, in their current view, represented the most opportune path forward.
In a parallel development, the Director-General, Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, publicly echoed his support for a similar decision. He affirmed his alignment with the choice made by his Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area caucus to follow Governor Yusuf, regardless of the party he might choose. This statement followed a meeting of NNPP caucus members in Dawakin Tofa LGA, where the council chairman, Anas Danmaliki, declared that he and all councillors in the area would align with Governor Yusuf. Tofa, reacting to Danmaliki's declaration, stated, "I, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, as one of the caucus of the party in the LGA, am with whatever Danmaliki said 1,000 percent."
As of the time this report was filed, neither Governor Yusuf nor Senator Kwankwaso has released any official statement concerning the mounting speculation. This silence has kept the political direction of the NNPP in Kano State a subject of intense and growing public interest, leaving many to wonder about the future allegiances of the state's leadership.
