Political Earthquake: UK Health Minister Wes Streeting Quits, Calls for Starmer's Resignation

Wes Streeting has resigned as Health Secretary, triggering a major political crisis within the Labour Party and intensifying calls for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down. Streeting's departure on Thursday, May 14, comes against a backdrop of Starmer's record-low popularity ratings and the party's disastrous results in recent local and regional elections, which saw significant gains for Reform UK and the Greens at Labour's expense, and the loss of the devolved Welsh parliament.
In a lengthy and detailed resignation letter, Streeting asserted that it would have been “dishonourable” to remain in his post given his lost confidence in Starmer’s leadership. He criticized Starmer's governance, stating, “Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift.” He also condemned Starmer's “heavy-handed approach to dissenting voices,” suggesting it diminishes politics. Streeting highlighted specific policy missteps, including the decision to cut the winter fuel allowance (later largely backtracked) and the controversial “island of strangers” speech from May last year, which some MPs saw as alienating left-wing voters and echoing Enoch Powell.
