Political Earthquake: APC Rejects Governorship Hopeful in Ogun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially disowned Abayomi Hunye as its candidate for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, asserting that Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, remains the party’s legitimate candidate. This declaration was made by APC national secretary Ajibola Basiru in a statement released on Monday in Abuja, where he described Hunye as an impostor who is currently under suspension from the party.

Basiru clarified that Hunye is not a member of the APC in good standing, having been suspended from the party on April 7, 2026. His suspension stemmed from a petition lodged by his Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area, which was subsequently ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee and communicated to the party’s national headquarters. The reasons cited for Hunye’s suspension include engaging in activities deemed injurious to the party’s image, anti-party activities, and actions allegedly aimed at fostering division among members.

The national secretary further stated that Hunye’s recent self-declaration as the governorship candidate for the 2027 election is entirely false, unauthorized, and a mischievous attempt to mislead the public. The APC reiterated that following a validly conducted primary election, Senator Adeola Olamilekan emerged as the duly nominated and elected governorship candidate for the 2027 Ogun State election, with Balogun Abiodun serving as his running mate. The names and particulars of both Olamilekan and Abiodun have been successfully uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal, and the commission has issued the requisite acknowledgement slips.

The APC issued a stern warning to all individuals and organizations against conducting any political activities with Hunye under the guise of representing the party, emphasizing that anyone who associates, collaborates, or transacts political business with Hunye in the name of the APC does so at their own risk. Despite the party’s firm stance, Abayomi Hunye is currently challenging the party’s consensus governorship primary, which produced Olamilekan, in a suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja. He maintains his assertion that he is still in the 2027 governorship race and has publicly announced Abayomi Odunowo, a former fellow aspirant and political associate, as his preferred running mate.
