Plateau Horror: 20 Lives Lost in Devastating Multi-Vehicle Crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially confirmed a tragic multiple road traffic crash that resulted in the death of 20 individuals along the Hawan Kibo-Jos route in Plateau State. Osondu Ohaeri, the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), released a statement on Friday in Abuja detailing the grim incident.

According to Mr. Ohaeri, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:32 p.m. in the vicinity of Sopp Water Falls. Initial investigations point towards brake failure and subsequent loss of control as the likely causes of the accident.

A total of 25 people were involved in the unfortunate event, comprising 23 males and two females. Among them, five individuals – three males and two females – sustained injuries. Tragically, all 20 fatalities were males.

The collision involved four vehicles: a Howo Sino truck with registration number AGL 525 YN, a Toyota Corolla bearing registration number AB 129 M, a Toyota Bummer bus operated by Yankari Express, and a motorcycle whose registration details were unavailable.

In the aftermath, FRSC rescue personnel swiftly responded to the scene. The injured victims were promptly evacuated to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were respectfully deposited at JUTH Mortuary. Furthermore, the FRSC team successfully cleared the obstruction caused by the crash, restoring the affected section of the highway to normal traffic flow.

Reacting to the devastating incident, FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed profound sadness over the significant loss of lives. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and associates of those who perished, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of their souls. Mr. Mohammed also wished a speedy recovery to all injured victims and issued a directive for the crash investigation team to conduct a thorough inquiry.

The Corps Marshal emphasized the importance of a detailed investigation to ascertain the precise circumstances leading to the incident, with particular attention to the reported brake failure and loss of control. He seized the opportunity to issue a strong admonition to motorists, especially operators of commercial and heavy-duty vehicles, urging them to prioritize roadworthiness, consistent vehicle maintenance, responsible speed management, and overall cautious driving practices.

Mr. Mohammed underscored the gravity of the situation, stressing that the loss of 20 lives in a single crash is far more than a mere statistic. “The loss of 20 lives in a single crash represents 20 families suddenly plunged into grief. Behind every number is a name, a home, a family and a future,” he articulated, highlighting the profound human cost of such tragedies. He concluded by imploring all road users to embrace personal responsibility for safety, asserting that no journey is so urgent that it should culminate in death.
