Paddington Returns! Armando Iannucci Penning Fourth Film as Director in Talks

The beloved Paddington Bear franchise is gearing up for its next big-screen adventure, "Paddington 4," with a new creative team at the helm. Variety has exclusively confirmed that Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated writer Armando Iannucci, known for creating hit satirical shows like “Veep” and “The Thick of It,” will write the upcoming film. He will be joined on screenplay duties by his long-standing collaborator, fellow Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated writer Simon Blackwell, a key writer on both “Veep” and “The Thick of It.” Additionally, Dougal Wilson, who directed the third film, “Paddington in Peru,” is reportedly in talks to return for the fourth installment.
Armando Iannucci has a distinguished career in comedy writing, having also contributed to the creation of the iconic TV character Alan Partridge, written for “The Day Today,” and more recently created HBO’s “Avenue 5.” His film credits include co-writing and directing “In the Loop,” which garnered an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay in 2010, and “The Death of Stalin.” Simon Blackwell, meanwhile, is recognized for creating the British dark comedy show “Breeders” and sitcom “Back,” and also co-wrote “In the Loop” and Iannucci’s last feature film, “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” which notably featured Ben Whishaw, the voice of Paddington.
The move to bring in writers celebrated for sharp political satire and dark comedy marks a fascinating new direction for the "Paddington" series, which is revered for its warmth, kindness, and gentle humor. Balancing Paddington’s impeccably well-mannered nature with his endearing clumsiness has been a hallmark of the franchise, elevating films like the critically adored “Paddington 2” to cinematic masterpiece status. Producer Rosie Alison, who first conceived the idea of a live-action-meets-VFX Paddington film two decades ago and continues to produce for Heyday Films, previously emphasized that director Dougal Wilson was chosen for his "Paddingtonian" qualities, embodying the bear's positive values. The expectation is that Iannucci and Blackwell will similarly embrace this spirit.
The "Paddington" franchise has been a global success, with the previous films – “Paddington” (2014), “Paddington 2” (2017), and “Paddington in Peru” (2024) – achieving a combined global box office in excess of $800 million. Paul King directed the first two installments, while Dougal Wilson took over for the third. The development of "Paddington 4" was officially announced earlier this year at CinemaCon, where Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh revealed that “world-renowned comedy writers” had been hired, a promise now fulfilled with the confirmation of Iannucci and Blackwell.
