Oyo Schoolchildren Freed! Abducted Students Rescued in Bold Operation, 8 Kidnappers Arrested
A coordinated security operation successfully rescued all 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers abducted in Oyo State, with the Federal Government refusing to negotiate with the Ansaru terrorists. Experts revealed the abduction was a strategic plot to free detained leaders, met by the government's 'fire for fire' response and advanced intelligence. This decisive action led to the arrest and neutralization of abductors, signaling a new, tough stance against kidnapping.
All 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers abducted from three schools in the Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026, were successfully rescued on July 10, following a meticulously coordinated security operation by federal authorities. This intensive 56-day effort saw all surviving victims recovered safely, marking a significant victory against abduction.
Seyi Adetayo, a security and intelligence expert, revealed in an interview on Arise News that the Federal Government adopted a stringent policy, refusing to negotiate with the abductors. Adetayo identified the perpetrators as members of Ansaru, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda, describing their operation as carefully planned. He stated that the government was resolved to employ a 'fire for fire' approach, deploying elite intelligence and military units instead of ceding to demands, thereby avoiding the creation of an 'enterprise' around kidnapping by paying ransom.
According to Adetayo, the abduction was a strategic maneuver aimed at coercing the government into releasing two detained Ansaru leaders. These individuals are reportedly wanted by both the United States and the United Kingdom for alleged terror-related activities. The South-West region, being the President’s home area, was deliberately targeted to generate widespread media attention and exert maximum pressure on the government, leveraging the vibrant media landscape of the region.
Adetayo emphasized that the government's refusal to bargain with the Oyo State abductors sent a strong message that terrorism and kidnapping would not be rewarded, arguing that past negotiations and ransom payments have only fueled the rise in mass abductions. He praised the current government and armed forces for this resolute approach, suggesting it breaks a cycle that has persisted for years.
The operation underscored Nigeria’s robust security capabilities. Adetayo claimed that security agencies utilized advanced intelligence and surveillance throughout the rescue mission. Operatives continuously monitored the abductors’ movements and communications, tracked and apprehended their relatives across several states, and employed technology to identify those involved, even when their identities were not publicly known. This sophisticated intelligence-led approach proved crucial in the successful outcome.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga corroborated these details, confirming that the rescue was achieved without any 'quid pro quo.' He announced that eight kidnappers were arrested during the operation and are currently in DSS custody, while some others were neutralized. Onanuga further stressed that one of the terrorist kingpins whose release was demanded by the abductors remains in custody and is actively facing prosecution for his atrocities. Adetayo additionally noted that none of the terrorists involved in the abduction survived, and family members found to be complicit in the trade were also apprehended and faced legal proceedings, demonstrating the comprehensive nature of the security response and the government's unwavering stance against such criminal activities.
