Delta Killing Sparks Outrage as Police Officer Faces Dismissal And Prosecution

The killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, has triggered nationwide outrage after a viral video showed him being shot while handcuffed by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, has drawn condemnation from legal bodies and civil society groups, who described it as an extrajudicial execution. Ogidi was seen pleading for his life before being shot at close range, raising serious concerns about abuse of power and disregard for due process.
The case has since intensified scrutiny on police conduct and the enforcement of human rights in Nigeria. The Nigerian Bar Association condemned the act as unlawful and demanded a transparent prosecution of all officers involved, not just the primary suspect.
Human rights groups, including the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, also called for an independent investigation, warning against any internal cover-up.
They stressed that the incident reflects a pattern of rights violations and urged authorities to ensure justice for the victim’s family. The demands include public disclosure of findings and adequate compensation.
Public anger spilled into the streets as members of the Take-It-Back Movement staged protests in Warri, demanding accountability. The demonstration turned chaotic after armed individuals attacked protesters, while security operatives reportedly used teargas and force on the crowd. Amid the backlash, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu approved the dismissal of the officer involved, with the Police Service Commission expected to ratify the decision.
Authorities confirmed that those implicated will face prosecution, as the police leadership reiterates its stance against extrajudicial actions.
