Outrage Erupts After Tragic Kitengela Rally Shooting, Family Demands Justice
A peaceful ‘Linda Mwananchi’ rally organized by a faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Kitengela on Sunday, February 16, 2026, turned tragic following the death of 28-year-old Vincent Ayomo Otieno.
The faction, led by embattled Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, strongly condemned the incident, alleging that Ayomo was fatally shot by police during efforts to disperse the gathering.
In a statement, ODM described the events as “state-sponsored acts of violence,” accusing police officers and alleged hired individuals of opening fire on attendees, injuring several others, and vandalizing the public address system set up for the meeting.
The party maintained that participants were exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
Ayomo’s family confirmed he was shot in the face — specifically in the left eye — at around 6 PM.
Speaking from the Nairobi Funeral Home, they expressed deep grief and anger.
Ayomo, who worked at a garage in Kitengela, was a husband and father to a one-and-a-half-year-old child.
The ODM faction called for accountability, stating that President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen should bear responsibility for the incident.
The party pledged to seek justice, insisting the deceased had committed no crime and posed no threat.
Several political leaders condemned the violence, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, ODM Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, and Senators Richard Onyonka and Okong’o Omugeni.
Members of Parliament such as Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi, Caroli Omondi, Anthony Kibagendi, and Julius Mawathe also publicly criticized the disruption and loss of life.
Following the allegations, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) launched a rapid-response investigation into claims of excessive force by officers assigned to maintain order at the rally.
IPOA stated it would examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, determine the extent of police involvement, and assess whether the force used was lawful and proportionate.
The authority pledged to issue an independent report and ensure accountability within the National Police Service if misconduct is established.
