Osimhen Issues Bold Challenge After Besiktas Win, Liverpool in His Sights
Galatasaray Striker Victor Osimhen has urged his teammates to remain focused despite the club’s impressive recent form, warning that the coming days could define their entire season, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Turkish champions continued their strong run with a confident 3-1 victory over Alanyaspor at RAMS Park on Saturday.
Osimhen once again played a decisive role, scoring one goal and providing an assist as Galatasaray strengthened their position at the top of the Turkish Super Lig standings.
Fresh off spearheading his side's qualification for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16—a feat the club hasn't achieved in 12 years—Osimhen returned to the starting lineup as Galatasaray welcomed Alanyaspor to Rams Park.
The Cimbom needed a win to solidify their position at the summit of the Süper Lig table, and they delivered.
He refused to receive the captain’s armband for Galatasaray in the second half of their Turkish Super Lig match against Antalyaspor.
The 27-year-old was handed the captaincy after Lucas Torreira, stand-in captain for the match was substituted in the 79th minute of their 3-1 victory, with Osimhen netting the clincher four minutes later.
Club captain Mauro Icardi did not start the match, while vice-captains Abdülkerim Bardakcı and Kaan Ayhan were also unavailable.
Their absence placed captaincy duties on midfielder Torreira to lead the team in the match, and his exit left a vacuum of leadership on the pitch.
Ilkay Gundogan, captain at Man City before his move to Galatasaray, replaced Torreira and handed over the armband to Osimhen.
Speaking on the gesture afterwards, Osimhen described receiving the armband as strange, but insisted Gundogan is a worthy leader of the team.
“İlkay is someone I deeply respect and value. He’s an incredible person — calm and motivating at the same time. He’s always someone we can talk to. He has great vision.
“When he brought me the captain’s armband, it felt strange. I gave it back to him because he’s the one who should lead us. Every time he comes on, he helps the team. He truly deserves the love.”
This victory against Alanyaspor further solidified Galatasaray's strong recent form, allowing them to strengthen their position at the top of the Turkish Super Lig standings.
The win followed closely on the heels of their thrilling 7-5 aggregate triumph over Juventus in the UEFA Champions League, a historic result that propelled the Istanbul club into the Round of 16 for the first time in 12 years.
Across these two crucial fixtures, Osimhen delivered an impressive four goal contributions, comprising one goal and three assists, underscoring his decisive role in the team's success.
Victor Osimhen has called for complete focus from his teammates, warning that the coming weeks could define Galatasaray’s entire season.
The Istanbul giants are battling on three fronts, with little margin for distraction.
First comes a Turkish Cup clash against Alanyaspor, followed by a fierce away derby against Beşiktaş J.K., a fixture that could heavily influence the title race as Fenerbahçe S.K. and Trabzonspor remain within striking distance.
Osimhen made it clear the Beşiktaş showdown is critical, emphasizing that the squad must take it “one match at a time.”
He acknowledged the quality of their rivals but expressed confidence in Galatasaray’s own strength, insisting they will travel with the intention of claiming all three points.
Beyond domestic competition, the stakes rise even higher in Europe.
Galatasaray are set to host Liverpool F.C. in a blockbuster Champions League tie before heading to Anfield for the return leg and a daunting test against one of Europe’s elite.
Amid the intensity of competition, Osimhen also experienced an emotional moment off the pitch.
Ahead of the Alanyaspor match, Galatasaray supporters unveiled a special choreography honoring his late mother.
A banner reading, “We are a family, and family is more important than anything,” deeply moved the Nigerian striker.
He admitted that he had no prior knowledge of the tribute and described it as a powerful surprise.
Since arriving on loan, he says the connection with fans has gone beyond football, creating a bond he treasures deeply.
His performances have certainly repaid that love.
Across 36 appearances for club and country this season, Osimhen has delivered 26 goals and nine assists, 35 direct goal contributions and underlining his influence as Galatasaray chase silverware on multiple fronts.
With derbies, cup ties, and European nights looming, the message from Osimhen is simple: stay locked in. The defining stretch of the season has arrived.
