Osimhen's Missed Opportunity: Turkey Icon Weighs In on Galatasaray vs. Fenerbahçe Title Race
Former Turkey international and Galatasaray forward, Hasan Şaş, has offered his insights into the intense 2025-2026 Super Lig title race, confidently tipping Galatasaray to emerge victorious.
The 49-year-old believes his former club possesses the necessary championship mentality to overcome rivals, Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor as the season enters its crucial stages. Galatasaray currently holds the top spot in Turkish football, leading the table with 50 points from 21 matches following a convincing 3-0 away triumph over Çaykur Rizespor.
Fenerbahçe sits in second place, with an opportunity to reduce the gap to three points if they secure a win against Gençlerbirliği. Trabzonspor remains a strong contender in third position with 45 points, bolstered by the impressive goal-scoring form of Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu.
Despite the mounting pressure of the title run-in, Şaş emphasized that The Lions have cultivated the mental fortitude required to navigate challenging moments, pointing to Victor Osimhen’s performance against Rizespor as a testament to their champion character.
During the match, with the score at 1-0, Victor Osimhen had squandered a clear scoring opportunity. However, Şaş observed no signs of panic among the Galatasaray players. According to Şaş, as reported by Aslan CW, the absence of an attitude suggesting 'we won't win this match' among the players showcased their inherent 'championship reflex', indicating their composure and belief even after a missed chance.
Despite the earlier miss, Osimhen once again proved his scoring prowess, finding the back of the net to seal Galatasaray's comfortable road victory. The Nigerian striker struck in the 73rd minute, receiving a pass from Noa Lang at the edge of the box. He skillfully drove into the area, rounded goalkeeper Fofana, and calmly finished into an empty net from a tight angle, making the score 3-0.
This goal brought Osimhen’s tally to 15 across all competitions this season. He has now maintained an impressive scoring streak, netting in five consecutive Super Lig matches and accumulating six goals within that run. In the Super Lig alone, the 27-year-old boasts nine goals, complemented by six strikes in the UEFA Champions League, solidifying his status as one of Galatasaray’s standout performers in their dual pursuit of domestic and European success.
