Orlando Pirates Shockwave: R100M Player Deals Shake Up African Football

Orlando Pirates is reportedly set to undergo significant squad changes at the conclusion of the current season, with several experienced players potentially departing. Following the earlier release of Olisa Ndah, the club is now expected to part ways with Tapelo Xoki. The former AmaZulu captain has not featured throughout the entire season due to an injury, and with his contract nearing its expiration, it is considered unlikely that he will be offered an extension to remain with the Buccaneers.
Another prominent player whose departure seems imminent is right-back Bandile Shandu. Shandu has seen limited playing time this season, largely due to the presence of other players like Deano van Rooyen, Kamogelo Sebelebele, and Thabiso Lebitso occupying the right-back position. His agent, Mike Makaab, has also publicly stated the high probability of Shandu leaving the club. Makaab informed FARPost, "Bandile Shandu, as you know, his contract is coming to an end at the end of the season, and he hasn’t been playing. So, I can tell you that Shandu is unlikely to stay with Pirates when his contract comes to an end, and we are looking for other opportunities."
Despite these anticipated player movements, Orlando Pirates has secured a significant achievement for the upcoming campaign. The Buccaneers have officially qualified for the CAF Champions League next season. This qualification was confirmed after their rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, suffered a defeat against Siwelele midweek. This marks a renewed opportunity for the club in continental competition, especially after their performance in the current season's CAF Champions League where they experienced an early exit, losing in the preliminary round to DR Congo's Saint Éloi Lupopo in a dramatic penalty shootout. This was a step back from the previous campaign where the Sea Robbers had reached the semi-finals before being eliminated by eventual champions Pyramids FC.
Domestically, the current season has been largely positive for the Sea Robbers under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The team has already secured two domestic trophies, demonstrating strong performance on home ground. Furthermore, a potential treble remains within reach, contingent on them winning their remaining matches and Mamelodi Sundowns faltering. This successful domestic run provides a strong foundation as the team looks ahead to the next CAF Champions League season, albeit with a potentially reshaped squad.
