Orlando Pirates Transfer Shake-Up: Mabasa and Shandu Exit Amid January Moves

Orlando Pirates have been active in the January transfer window, balancing new acquisitions with notable departures. The club added Andre De Jong, Daniel Msendami, and Mpho Chabatsane, while offloading Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Sinoxolo Kwayiba. A key move sees striker Tshegofatso Mabasa join Stellenbosch FC on a six-month loan for the remainder of the season.
Mabasa’s move follows a period of limited playing time under Pirates’ new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, with the 29-year-old featuring in just nine matches across competitions. Despite scoring in the MTN8 final, he was often overlooked in favor of Evidence Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma. This loan continues a pattern in Mabasa’s career, having previously spent time on loan at Sekhukhune United and Swallows. His impressive form at Swallows, where he scored six goals in the first half of the season, led to a recall in January 2024, after which he finished as the PSL top scorer.
Speculation surrounds Mabasa’s potential return to Orlando Pirates in June, contingent on his performance at Stellenbosch. Analysts suggest scoring at least five or six goals could secure his recall. He is also approaching Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi’s club goalscoring record, adding further intrigue to his loan spell.
Mabasa’s arrival at Stellenbosch has implications for other clubs. Kaizer Chiefs striker Tashreeq Morris, previously linked with a move to Stellies, may now see limited opportunities, as Stellenbosch are expected to prioritize the Pirates striker. Chiefs’ current attacking roster includes Morris, Ashley du Preez, Khanyisa Mayo, Naledi Hlungwane, Etiosa Ighodaro, and Flavio Silva, reducing the likelihood of a permanent move for Morris this season.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates’ transfer activity is likely to remain subdued unless injuries occur, especially after their exit from the CAF Confederation Cup. Attention is also on right-back Bandile Shandu, a five-year veteran with 110 appearances for the club, whose contract expires at the end of the season. Discussions between his agent, Mike Makaab, and club management are ongoing regarding his future, leaving his next move uncertain. Shandu’s potential departure marks another significant change in the Pirates’ squad amid a busy transfer window.
