Bitcoin Soars Past $81,000, Igniting Crypto Stock Rally
Bitcoin has seen a notable surge, climbing to over $81,000, driven by positive regulatory news and U.S. Treasury announcements. This rally has also boosted related crypto stocks like MicroStrategy and Coinbase, along with several Bitcoin mining companies. Investor confidence is high, leading to significant inflows into Bitcoin ETFs, though the cryptocurrency remains below its all-time high.
Bitcoin experienced a significant surge on Thursday, reaching as high as $81,282 in New York, marking a nearly 3% increase over a 24-hour period. This upward momentum is part of a broader rally that has seen the price of the biggest cryptocurrency climb over 23% in the past 30 days. This impressive performance is attributed to a combination of positive regulatory news and strategic announcements from the U.S. Treasury Department.
The rally in Bitcoin was mirrored, and in many cases outpaced, by the rapid ascent of industry-related stocks. MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), a prominent company with a substantial Bitcoin treasury strategy, saw its stock trading more than 13% higher on Thursday. This surge followed the company's decision on Monday to resume Bitcoin purchases after a 10-week hiatus, during which it reshuffled its cash balance sheet. America's largest crypto exchange, Coinbase, also reported a strong performance, with its Nasdaq-listed stock (COIN) climbing 11% within the same timeframe.
Bitcoin mining companies were also significant beneficiaries of the market upswing. Several top public companies in the sector, including Nasdaq-listed HIVE Digital, MARA Holdings, and CleanSpark, all recorded substantial gains on Thursday. HIVE Digital led this group with a 13% jump, while MARA Holdings increased by over 10%. CleanSpark, a clean energy Bitcoin miner, saw its stock rise by 9%. Interestingly, IREN, a company gradually shifting its focus from mining operations to AI-compute, also posted a 4% increase.
August proved to be a phenomenal month for Bitcoin, ranking as its third-best month in history. This exceptional performance was largely spurred by the U.S. Treasury Department's announcement that it would more than double the size of its government debt repurchases. This measure, aimed at curbing surging yields not seen in nearly two decades, had the effect of weakening the dollar while simultaneously bolstering non-yielding assets such as Bitcoin and gold. Further catalyzing investor confidence, President Donald Trump publicly urged lawmakers to pass the long-awaited Crypto Clarity Act, a piece of digital asset legislation that the industry has advocated for extensively.
As a direct consequence of these positive developments, investors rapidly reinvested in Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), pouring over $2.8 billion into these vehicles. This marked the largest inflow since October when the cryptocurrency had previously achieved a new all-time high. Earlier in the year, Bitcoin had largely traded below the $80,000 per coin mark, with June and July mostly seeing prices below $65,000. Despite its recent gains, Bitcoin is currently trading nearly 40% below its record high of $126,080, which was established in October.
