The Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) has unveiled an ambitious long-term development strategy, spearheaded by President Francis Orbih. This plan focuses on grassroots expansion, coach and umpire development, and fostering international representation, aiming to reposition Nigerian badminton globally within the next two to three years.
Badminton Federation of Nigeria President Francis Orbih has unveiled a long-term strategy aimed at transforming Nigerian badminton into a stronger force on the African and global stage. Speaking during the federation’s two-day retreat in Abuja, Orbih emphasized the need for deliberate planning, grassroots expansion, and sustainable development structures.
The retreat gathered board members, technical experts, and stakeholders to map out a clear roadmap for the sport’s future. Orbih stated that the federation intends to move beyond routine administration by pursuing measurable goals over the next two to three years.
A major focus of the strategy includes expanding badminton programs in schools and local communities while strengthening coaches’ education and umpire development. He stressed that proper planning and technical growth are essential for Nigeria to compete more effectively internationally.
The BFN president also highlighted growing international recognition for Nigerian badminton officials, including the recent invitation of a Nigerian umpire to officiate at the World Junior Championships in India.
Beyond athlete development, the federation aims to prepare more Nigerians for leadership roles within African and global badminton bodies. Orbih added that the initiative aligns with the broader agenda of the National Sports Commission and reflects the federation’s commitment to building a stronger and more globally competitive badminton structure.
