Ondo Boils: Residents Outrage Over Fresh Killings, Demand Answers on Security Spending

Residents from Imafon, Igushin, and Ilado communities in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State recently staged a significant protest, expressing their outrage over a harrowing wave of attacks and killings that have tragically claimed at least two lives and left several others injured in recent days. The demonstration, held on a Saturday, saw a large number of frustrated citizens barricade the busy Shoprite intersection, a critical junction just meters from the Governor’s Office. This action brought traffic to a complete standstill, serving as a stark public outcry against the relentless violence that has plunged their communities into profound mourning.
The escalating tension reached a critical point earlier in the week. On Thursday, suspected bandits launched an invasion into Igushin community, where a failed kidnapping attempt tragically resulted in the fatal shooting of a poultry farm owner and her daughter by the assailants. Less than twenty-four hours after this devastating incident, gunmen struck again in the neighboring Ilado community. In this subsequent attack, a popular local youth was abducted. Reports indicate that the victim sustained severe injuries, being macheted and shot while bravely attempting to escape from his captors, an event that further deepened the pervasive fear and insecurity among the residents.
During the protest, a prominent youth leader, identified only as Kunle, voiced the collective despair and anger of the communities. He vehemently decried what he termed the unchecked operations of armed criminals, which he stated were occurring across the entire Akure axis, including areas disturbingly close to the state capital. Kunle critically questioned the expenditure and tangible impact of the state’s allocated security vote, arguing that despite these financial provisions, their beneficial effects were yet to be observed, even as the security situation continued to deteriorate significantly. He emotionally articulated the communities' plight, stating, "We are protesting the incessant killings and kidnappings in Imafon, Igushin and Ilado. Just two days ago, a mother and her daughter were killed, and yesterday, another young man was brutally attacked."
Further emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Kunle asserted, "We want the government to rise to its responsibility. We have not seen any impact of the monthly security votes being allocated. We are tired of burying our people every week while those responsible for our safety appear helpless." He continued, highlighting the brazenness of the criminals: "These gunmen operate freely, even within the state capital, yet there is no visible security presence—no patrols, no intervention, no results. We are asking: where exactly is the security vote going?" The youth leader issued a stern warning that the residents were resolute in their decision to sustain the protest until decisive and effective measures are implemented to unequivocally guarantee the safety of lives and property within the beleaguered communities.
This Saturday’s demonstration is not an isolated incident but rather the latest in a series of similar protests that have swept across various parts of Ondo State over the past three months. These widespread demonstrations are uniformly driven by the persistent and alarming prevalence of kidnappings and killings, underscoring a deep-seated crisis of insecurity that demands urgent governmental attention and action.
