Senator Adeola Emerges Unopposed as APC Governorship Candidate in Ogun
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as "Yayi," has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State after securing the party’s ticket unopposed during a peaceful primary election. The exercise, conducted across the state's 236 wards, recorded a large turnout of party members and reinforced the APC’s show of unity ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Adeola’s emergence followed the withdrawal of fellow aspirant, Hon. Abayomi Hundeyi, who formally stepped down from the race on the day of the primary election.
Hundeyi, a former General Manager of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), communicated his decision to party leaders, effectively leaving Adeola as the sole contender for the ticket.
The senator’s candidacy had already gained momentum after receiving the backing of party stakeholders during earlier consultations. His emergence was widely anticipated following endorsements from influential party leaders and support from several former aspirants.
Reports indicated that more than 10 aspirants who had initially shown interest in the race later stepped aside and threw their support behind Adeola, who currently represents Ogun West Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
Party officials and observers described the primary as peaceful and orderly, with no major incidents reported across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Speaking after participating in the exercise in Ikenne Local Government Area, Dapo Abiodun said the APC adopted extensive consultations and consensus-building measures to manage the selection process.
According to the governor, more than 700 aspirants initially expressed interest in various elective positions under the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Abiodun explained that party leaders engaged in broad consultations to identify candidates while maintaining internal cohesion and reducing potential disputes. The consensus approach helped prevent divisions and encouraged cooperation among party stakeholders, he said.
The governor also stressed that no aspirant was compelled to withdraw from any contest, insisting that the process was voluntary and aimed at strengthening the party ahead of future elections.
With Adeola now confirmed as the APC governorship candidate, attention is expected to shift toward the broader political landscape in Ogun State as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 electoral contest.
For the APC, the smooth conduct of the primary and Adeola’s unopposed emergence are being viewed as an early boost to the party’s campaign preparations in one of Nigeria’s politically significant states.
