As autumn fully embraces cooler temperatures and increased rainfall, diligent garden care becomes paramount to ensure a resilient winter and a vibrant flourishing next summer. Jamie Shipley, a seasoned gardening expert and Managing Director of Hedges Direct, offers crucial advice for October's essential gardening tasks, covering everything from timely pruning and planting to disease vigilance and general maintenance.

Shipley emphasizes that autumn is an opportune time to assess and tidy outdoor spaces that may have become unruly, and to implement preventative measures to safeguard the garden against impending storms.

One of the primary tasks for October is the pruning of deciduous trees and shrubs. This period is considered ideal due to typically mild weather, which minimizes the risk of cold-induced damage to plants and avoids disturbing nesting birds. For deciduous shrubs, the goal is to lightly trim new, unruly growth from late summer, maintaining their size and shape to prevent them from overshadowing other plants or monopolizing light and nutrients. When pruning deciduous trees, gardeners should prioritize removing branches that are dead, damaged, or diseased (the 'three D's') and any crossing branches that could cause friction and damage to the wood. Cuts should be clean, made with sharp loppers, and aim to leave a collar of approximately 3-5 cm where the branch meets the trunk.

Despite the abundance of autumn rain, early-flowering shrubs benefit significantly from additional watering, especially if October proves dry. Species like Azaleas, Camellias, and Rhododendrons require this extra hydration to ensure they display their best blooms in spring.

October also presents an excellent window for planting certain flowers and bulbs, provided the weather remains warm and the soil is sufficiently moist to allow root establishment. Jamie suggests planting Dogwood, Firethorn, Skimmia, and Viburnum to introduce vibrant color to the garden. Spring-flowering bulbs, including daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, and tulips, can also be planted. Hardy bulbs generally thrive in sunny spots with good drainage. When planting, dig a hole wide and deep enough to accommodate the bulbs, typically 2-3 times their depth, spacing them about a hand-span apart with the pointed tip facing upwards.

Sowing flower seeds in October can yield superior results for several varieties. Aquilegia seeds should be planted 2-3 per 9 cm pot with fresh compost and lightly covered. Autumn-sown Cornflower seeds produce larger, bushier plants that flower earlier than spring-sown ones; these should be sprinkled on raked, weed-free soil and lightly covered. Californian Poppies sown in October will lead to gorgeous plants the following spring, requiring weeds and stones to be cleared before scattering seeds lightly on the soil and covering them. For Sweet Peas, 'nicking' the seed case with a clean, sharp knife before planting three seeds in a 9cm pot with good quality compost is recommended. After watering well, these should be kept in a cold frame or cool greenhouse for planting out in May.

Garden maintenance during autumn focuses on protection against wet and windy conditions. Key preventative measures include reinforcing tree ties and stakes for newly planted trees and propping up older ones. Raking dead leaves and debris is crucial to prevent diseases from lurking in rotting refuse. October is also an ideal time to sow grass seed due to plentiful rain, warm soil, and fewer weeds and foraging birds. Applying an autumn fertilizer will help protect the lawn from diseases, moss invasion, and weeds.

While the peak pest and disease season typically wanes by autumn, a few specific threats still require vigilance. Honey fungus, a creamy-colored parasitic fungus, causes sudden plant death, unusual wilting, prematurely dying stems, and distinct black bootlaces threading through the soil at the base of tree trunks. Unfortunately, there is no effective cure, and affected plants must be dug up and removed. Grey mould, a common fungal disease, manifests as a furry mould on vegetables, perennials, soft fruit, and greenhouse plants, shriveling flowers and buds and damaging fruit. Again, removal of affected plants is the only remedy. Prevention involves ensuring ample space between plants for good air circulation, especially in greenhouses. Powdery mildew appears as a white/grey powdery film on leaves, which can spread to the entire plant. Affected areas should be removed immediately. Commercial sprays are available, or a homemade solution of 3 teaspoons of baking powder, 500ml of water, and a drop of washing-up liquid can be sprayed as needed. Silver leaf, a fungal disease attacking stone fruit like apples and plums, is often triggered by wet, mild weather. If suspected, pruning a dead branch and dampening the cut end will reveal a purple or dark brown stain if the tree is infected.
