Nord Stream Sabotage: Man Charged in German Court for Pipeline Attack
German prosecutors have charged Ukrainian national Serhii K. with the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline sabotage, alleging he led a team on a yacht. The operation, reportedly conceived by Ukrainian military officers and costing $300,000, proceeded despite a halt order from President Zelenskyy. This incident fueled tensions as Europe sought to reduce reliance on Russian energy, damaging both Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines.
German federal prosecutors have announced charges against a suspect in the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which connects Russia with Europe. The individual, identified as Serhii K., a Ukrainian national, is believed to have led the team responsible for the operation. He was initially arrested in Italy in the summer of 2025 and subsequently extradited to Germany in November of the same year. Serhii K. faces serious charges, including "attacks on civilian energy infrastructure, causing an explosives detonation, and demolition of built structures." He is currently detained in Hamburg, awaiting trial.
Investigators suspect Serhii K. was in command of the yacht used to carry out the sabotage. The evidence gathered against him is described as "overwhelming," reportedly including self-incriminating statements made during phone calls to relatives and acquaintances while he was in custody in Italy.
Reports from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) in 2024 detailed the operation, suggesting a small Ukrainian crew, disguised as a pleasure boat cruise, was behind the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. The scheme was reportedly conceived during a
