Nollywood Legend Olu Jacobs, 'Lion of Lufodo,' Passes Away at 84

Veteran Nollywood actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, widely celebrated as the “Lion of Lufodo” and a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), has passed away at the age of 84. His son, Olu Jacobs Jr., confirmed the news on Wednesday morning in a statement released on behalf of the family. The statement expressed gratitude for a life well lived and fought, announcing the passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.

Olu Jacobs’ distinguished career spanned six decades, starting with his education at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). After graduating, he built a notable career across various stages, including the Royal National Theatre. His early work also included appearances in British television series such as The Venturers and Angels, as well as international feature films, notably John Irvin’s 1980 production, The Dogs of War.

Upon his return to Nigeria, Olu Jacobs became a central and foundational figure in modern Nollywood. He delivered numerous iconic performances in classic films like Oganigwe, The Royal Hibiscus Hotel, and Isakaba, earning him immense veneration as one of the true elder statesmen of Nigerian cinema.

His vast contributions to African performing arts were recognized through several prestigious accolades. In 2011, he was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). He also received the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and an Industry Merit Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2013, solidifying his legacy in the entertainment industry.

Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, the legendary actress Joke Silva, his children, and a grandchild. The family has respectfully requested privacy during this period of mourning.
