Nigerian Senate in Heated Debate Over Ex-CDS Musa's Defence Minister Screening

President Bola Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, as the new Minister of Defence, following the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, who cited health concerns. The Senate promptly commenced Musa's screening, underscoring the critical need to bolster Nigeria's internal peace and stability amidst escalating security challenges. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Leader of the Senate, confirmed the urgency of the screening, which he stated would be conducted expeditiously, consistent with Section 147 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
Hon. Jimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, expressed strong endorsement for General Musa, describing him as “a good fit… a soldier’s soldier… with a big heart” who commands the widespread respect of the Armed Forces, Parliament, and Nigerians. Benson, who had previously screened Musa, highlighted his competence, compassion, and extensive frontline experience.
