This development has elicited varied reactions from key stakeholders, most notably the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Nigerian government, underscoring the complex dynamics surrounding the Biafran self-determination movement and international judicial cooperation.

In a formal declaration, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) categorically disassociated itself from Simon Ekpa, asserting that he has never been an official member or held any position within the movement or its security arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). IPOB, through its Media and Publicity Secretary, stated that records from a Finnish court clearly show their testimony under oath confirming Ekpa's non-affiliation. Furthermore, Ekpa himself, under oath, reportedly described himself as a mere content creator and admitted to having disowned IPOB. The group warned against misrepresenting his conviction as being linked to IPOB, reiterating its commitment to nonviolent methods and lawful self-determination, emphasizing its registration under international law. IPOB also noted that Ekpa had established parallel groups and initiatives not recognized by their mainstream organization and urged the international community to ensure that the ongoing trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in Nigeria remains uninfluenced by Ekpa's unrelated case.

Conversely, the Nigerian government has lauded the Finnish court's decision as a major victory in its fight against insecurity and terrorism. Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, expressed his satisfaction, stating that Ekpa's conviction for terrorism and related offences confirmed his influence in committing heinous crimes, particularly in Nigeria's South East. Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, echoed this sentiment on social media, hailing the sentencing as a "major victory for the Nigerian people in the collective fight against terror." Mr. Fagbemi also commended Finnish authorities for their support in combating insecurity, viewing it as a promising sign for future collaborations and indicating that further actions would be considered upon detailed review of the judgment.

Simon Ekpa, a 40-year-old Nigerian-Finnish citizen, was arrested on November 21, 2024, alongside four others on suspicion of terrorist activities. Finnish police accused him of contributing to violence and crimes against civilians in South-eastern Nigeria. The Päijät-Häme District Court initially ordered his imprisonment "with probable cause on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent." Investigations revealed Ekpa was suspected of financing terrorism by collecting money in violation of the Finnish Money Collection Act between August 23, 2021, and November 18, 2024. While the other four suspects were later released, Ekpa faced charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent and participation in a terrorist group, all linked to his secessionist activities in "Biafra land," which he denied in his initial court appearance on May 30. Ekpa leads "Autopilot," a faction of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group advocating for an independent state of Biafra, though IPOB has consistently denied involvement in deadly attacks linked to the separatist movement.

Amidst these developments, the Finland Ambassador to Nigeria, Sanna Selin, provided insights into bilateral relations between Finland and Nigeria, during an interview conducted several days before the public announcement of Ekpa's conviction.
