Nigeria Rocks With Electricity Tariff Confusion Amidst Looming Subsidy End

The Federal Government has announced its strategic plan to phase out electricity subsidy payments beginning in 2027, a move aimed at tackling the burgeoning liabilities within the power sector and ensuring its long-term sustainability. Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, conveyed this decision during a media interactive session in Abuja, clarifying that while subsidies would be eliminated, there are no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, a key assurance reiterated amidst public concerns.

Addressing various reports, an analyst and stakeholder in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, Gaffar Tunde, clarified that news regarding alleged plans for immediate tariff increases and subsidy removal has been fraught with inaccuracies. Minister Tegbe himself explained that the electricity subsidy in Nigeria represents a tariff shortfall rather than a direct government handout, distinguishing it from petrol subsidies. He urged a focus on positive developments and the journey ahead for Nigeria's electricity sector.

Minister Tegbe outlined his administration's key priorities for the power sector. His foremost priority is a comprehensive technical audit of the transmission segment of the electricity network. This audit aims to pinpoint ageing assets, overloaded substations, weak transmission corridors, protection failures, system bottlenecks, and operational vulnerabilities. The exercise will serve as a crucial basis for prioritizing investments, reducing system failures, enhancing planning, and ensuring that every investment delivers measurable value.

Furthermore, the Ministry will initiate strategic investments across three critical transmission corridors: Lagos, Enugu–Port Harcourt, and Abuja–Kaduna–Kano, all designed to significantly improve grid stability. The Ministry is also adopting an integrated approach to electricity distribution, with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) actively addressing existing gaps to enhance electricity delivery. A key strategy involves a 'let the strong support the weak' approach, identifying commercially viable areas with high demand to bolster liquidity within the sector, which in turn will support more projects benefiting Nigerians.

The Minister also emphasized the Ministry's commitment to improved service delivery, particularly safeguarding vulnerable Nigerians. He acknowledged that while the country has made progress, achieving 5,000 MW in generation, this is not the ultimate goal. True success, he noted, lies in delivering transmission directly to households, communities, and industrial clusters, thereby providing reliable electricity to homes across the country.

Illustrating progress, Tegbe highlighted several essential facilities, such as universities and health centers, which have been successfully powered by mini-grids through the Rural Electrification Agency. He revealed plans for a new phase of projects to power institutions including the University of Lagos, UCH Ibadan, and The Polytechnic, Ibadan. These efforts underscore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's strong will to deliver this crucial dividend to every Nigerian.
