Nigeria to Launch Digital Single Travel Emergency Passport in 2026

Nigeria is set to modernize its migration and identity systems with the launch of the Single Travel Emergency Passport in January 2026. Announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, during the rollout of the ECOWAS Biometric ID Card in Abuja, the initiative signals a major shift toward a people-centered, technology-driven immigration system, promising enhanced mobility for citizens domestically and abroad.

Designed for Nigerians facing emergencies overseas, the digital passport allows users to generate a travel document directly from any mobile device, eliminating the need to visit embassies or consulates. This new system drastically reduces bureaucratic delays, shortens waiting times, and sets a benchmark for global best practices in identity management and efficiency.

Dr Tunji Ojo emphasized that the rollout reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ dignity and ensuring seamless travel. Integrated with the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card, the initiative aims to enhance cross-border cooperation, simplify travel across West Africa, and strengthen Nigeria’s leadership within the ECOWAS bloc.

The Single Travel Emergency Passport will replace the traditional Emergency Travel Certificate and be issued at Nigerian missions for single-entry use. The system supports broader reforms targeting modernized identity systems, robust border governance, and global-standard migration policies. Its responsive, adaptable framework is designed to serve Nigeria’s growing diaspora while fortifying connections with communities worldwide and enhancing citizen access.

Under Dr Tunji Ojo’s guidance, the Ministry of Interior has transformed passport administration, resolving long-standing backlogs that left citizens stranded. By leveraging technology, optimized workflows, and nationwide coordination, the ministry restored transparency and reliability, earning widespread acclaim from Nigerians at home and abroad.

Processing times for new passport applications have also improved markedly. Automation, refined logistics, and service-focused reforms have streamlined operations, providing predictable, faster, and more dependable services for domestic applicants and the diaspora. This responsiveness strengthens trust in the Nigerian government’s ability to deliver efficient public services and protects citizens’ interests globally.

The success of these reforms is reinforced by the collaboration between the Ministry of Interior and the Nigerian Immigration Service, led by Comptroller General Kemi Nandap. Her proactive management has translated policy reforms into practical outcomes, embedding modern technology and operational discipline into daily processes and ensuring that citizens directly benefit from these innovations.

Aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the initiative underscores the government’s focus on institutional transformation, innovation, and public-sector accountability. With the Single Travel Emergency Passport, Nigeria is set to usher in a digitized migration regime, offering citizens secure, convenient, and globally integrated travel.

For African travel professionals, Nigeria’s initiative exemplifies how targeted digital reforms and visionary leadership can reduce mobility barriers, streamline government services, and inspire similar modernization efforts across the continent. As the system becomes fully operational, Nigerian travelers can expect faster, safer, and more reliable journeys supported by a government committed to innovation and excellence in public service.
