Ben Affleck Joins AI Filmmaking in Netflix’s High-Stakes Tech Gamble

Ben Affleck continues to make innovation a central part of his mission in Hollywood.

The actor-filmmaker, 53, has sold his artificial intelligence-powered tech startup InterPositive to Netflix.

The acquisition, per a Thursday, March 5 Netflix release, signals that the streamer is “investing in creator-led innovation that keeps filmmakers at the center of the process.”

The Oscar winner will serve as a senior advisor.

Per Variety, InterPositive is made up of 16 engineers, researchers and creatives who will join Netflix, using the technology they’ve developed to assist with post-production on the streamer’s projects.

Furthermore, Affleck will take on the role of a senior adviser, offering continuous guidance to the streaming giant.

Netflix usually builds its own technology, but it saw something special in InterPositive’s AI tools.

Unlike typical AI platforms, InterPositive keeps “filmmakers at the center of the process.”

Netflix plans to give its creative partners access to this tech, but isn’t planning to sell it to the public anytime soon.

Based in Los Angeles and founded in 2022 by Ben Affleck, InterPositive operates in stealth mode.

Affleck made it clear in a video about the acquisition: this AI isn’t about typing a prompt and magically getting a movie.

“Most people think AI is about making something from nothing,” he said. “That’s not what we’re doing here.”

Instead of traditional tools, the InterPositive system builds an AI model directly from a production’s daily footage.

Once in the post-production workflow, it gives filmmakers powerful new tools like advanced color grading, relighting scenes, and seamlessly adding visual effects.

This move comes just after Netflix pulled out of its attempt to buy Warner Bros.

Discovery’s studios and streaming assets, leaving the door open for Paramount Skydance, which ultimately outbid them.

Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, says InterPositive’s AI technology will give creators more freedom, control, and protection over their work.

She emphasizes that Netflix wants artists to stay in charge of their stories, making sure AI supports and not replaces their creativity.

“New tools should unlock imagination, not limit it. Writers, directors, actors, and crews remain at the heart of storytelling,” Bajaria said.

She added that InterPositive is carrying forward a proud tradition of artists leading innovation in film and TV.

Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s chief product and technology officer, emphasized that most generative AI video platforms don’t think like filmmakers.

She explained that InterPositive’s tools are built to help creators make better content, not just faster or cheaper productions.

"Our AI is designed to truly support the creative community," Stone said, noting that InterPositive joined Netflix because both teams believe innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them.

She added that their technology gives filmmakers and showrunners tools that naturally align with their creative vision.

Affleck revealed how InterPositive came to life, inspired by what he saw in 2022: AI was starting to make waves in film production, but existing tools just weren’t cutting it for artists.

They lacked the subtlety and understanding that storytelling demands.

He felt a responsibility to safeguard the human touch, the creativity, intuition, and judgment that take decades to develop.

His mission? To build tools that honor the craft of filmmaking, from handling the quirks of lighting and lens distortion to navigating both the expected and surprising challenges that arise on set.

InterPositive kicked off by filming its own exclusive dataset on a controlled soundstage, recreating the full experience of a real production set.

Affleck wanted a system that “speaks the language” of directors and cinematographers, making sure the workflow felt natural and consistent.

Their first AI model learned to understand visual storytelling, keeping shots coherent and respecting cinematic rules and even when faced with challenges like missing footage, swapped backgrounds, or tricky lighting.

Importantly, the technology was designed to protect creative choices, letting artists stay in charge while exploring new possibilities.

Affleck shared his excitement about InterPositive’s ongoing work with Netflix and hopes their innovations will soon be accessible to filmmakers everywhere.
