NCIS Reaches Landmark 500 Episodes: Cast Reveals Longevity Secrets and Mark Harmon's Enduring Influence

Celebrating a monumental achievement in network television, NCIS recently marked its 500th episode, a milestone that actors Wilmer Valderrama and Emily Wickersham, showrunner Steven D. Binder, and actress Diona Reasonover attribute to a unique blend of relatable characters, evolving storytelling, and an incredibly loyal fanbase. For over two decades, the series has defied expectations, becoming a constant presence in millions of households worldwide.
Valderrama, who joined as Nick Torres in Season 14, and Wickersham, who played Ellie Bishop from Season 11 before returning for Season 23, emphasized the show's deeply human focus. They highlighted how NCIS resonates with viewers by portraying characters they can see themselves in, fostering a sense of comfort and connection. Valderrama noted the show's ability to evolve alongside its audience, creating a shared experience across generations. Wickersham shared fan anecdotes of watching the show with grandparents, underscoring its role as a lasting source of comfort, especially during difficult personal journeys. Her own experience of returning to the show felt serendipitous, like stepping back into a beloved family, allowing her character, Bishop, to become a "Bishop 2.0" – a changed, more assertive person.
Valderrama's entry into the series was distinct; he initially hesitated, believing the number one show wouldn't "need" him. However, the opportunity to create a new, distinct Latino character following Michael Weatherly's departure, alongside the collaborative environment, proved irresistible. He credits his time on NCIS with teaching him the value of collaboration and leading with solutions. Wickersham, in contrast, auditioned directly on set with established actors, a unique experience that eased pressure and ultimately changed her life.
Showrunner Steven D. Binder elucidated the creative philosophy behind the show's longevity, pointing to its blend of entertainment, surprises, twists, and humor, all grounded in a "truthfulness" of character reactions. This emotional honesty, he explained, allows audiences to feel deeply connected to the narratives. For the 500th episode, Binder aimed for an "epic" and "most surprising, emotional, and meaningful" story possible. This included putting NCIS itself in jeopardy, raising the stakes, and making a callback to a pivotal moment from Season 1, involving a character from Episode 2 whom they tracked down and brought back. The controversial decision to have Director Vance (Rocky Carroll) make the ultimate sacrifice was a deliberate homage to the show's history of real consequences, reminding viewers that NCIS never shies away from loss, which keeps the drama compelling.
Binder also reflected on standout storylines, such as Kate's death in Season 2, the young Ducky flashback episodes, Ziva's departure, and episodes featuring Gibbs's father. He noted that fan-favorite relationships, like the "Tiva" dynamic between Tony and Ziva, often developed organically from actor chemistry and fan investment, rather than initial plotting. He contrasted this with the challenges of writing drama for emotionally mature relationships like Knight and Jimmy Palmer, where inherent conflict is less pronounced.
Diona Reasonover, who joined as forensics specialist Kasie Hines in Season 15, echoed the sentiment about the fans being instrumental in the show's sustained success. She described how their loyalty, theories, and online engagement keep the show alive. Reasonover herself became a fan after joining, even converting her family, who now silence her during their viewings. She fondly recalled the warm and collaborative environment on set, crediting Mark Harmon, Sean Murray, Brian Dietzen, and Wilmer Valderrama for making her feel welcome. Working with the late David McCallum (Ducky) was a significant learning experience, characterized by his wisdom and collaborative spirit. Reasonover also discussed her character, Kasie, noting her infinite curiosity and a recent plotline exploring her doubts and fears. She co-hosts the "NCIS: The Official Podcast" with Brian Dietzen, an initiative that provides behind-the-scenes insights and allows actors to gauge fan reactions in real-time. Looking ahead, Reasonover humorously envisioned a future "NCIS: Helicopter" series.
Collectively, these reflections highlight NCIS not merely as a crime procedural, but as a living entity that deeply connects with its audience, evolving while staying true to its core of human-centric storytelling. Its ability to balance mystery, humor, character depth, and real-world stakes has solidified its place as a cultural touchstone that continues to bring generations together.
