NBA Shaken: Bucks Under Investigation After Giannis Health Declaration

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has launched an investigation into the Milwaukee Bucks regarding their adherence to the player participation policy and conflicting statements concerning the health and availability of star player Giannis Antetokounmpo. Sources close to the situation reveal that both Antetokounmpo and the Bucks have presented different accounts to league investigators, creating a complex narrative around his absence from recent games.
Giannis Antetokounmpo has consistently stated to both the Bucks organization and the NBA that he feels healthy and is eager to return to play. However, the team has reportedly not medically cleared him. Conversely, Milwaukee has informed the league that they do not believe Antetokounmpo is ready for game action and, furthermore, suggested that he may not truly desire to play. This contradiction forms the crux of the league's inquiry.
Antetokounmpo, 31, has been sidelined since hyperextending his left knee against the Indiana Pacers on March 15, an injury compounded by a bone bruise. He missed his tenth consecutive game on Friday night against the Boston Celtics. Despite his absence from official play, Antetokounmpo spoke to reporters before the Celtics game, reiterating his readiness: "I'm available to play, but I'm not in the game. I'm available to play today. Right now. I'm available."
Adding another layer to the controversy, sources indicated that shortly after his March 15 injury, the Bucks allegedly expressed a desire to shut down Antetokounmpo for the remainder of the season. However, Antetokounmpo reportedly refused this request, expressing a strong desire to return to the court before the season's end. The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) further inflamed the situation late last month by issuing a statement that implicitly accused the Bucks of "tanking" – deliberately underperforming – and thereby undermining the integrity of the league.
The Milwaukee Bucks were officially eliminated from postseason contention on March 28, marking their first absence from the playoffs since 2016. In their ongoing investigation, the NBA has conducted interviews with Antetokounmpo, members of the Bucks organization, and the team's medical staff. Antetokounmpo expressed his personal frustration, stating, "For somebody to come and tell me to not play or not to compete, it's like a slap in my face. So, I don't know where the relationship goes from there."
Bucks coach Doc Rivers addressed Antetokounmpo's comments after Friday night's loss, emphasizing his peripheral role in the decision-making process. "The tough part about all this is that I'm in the middle and I have nothing to do with it," Rivers explained. "Coaches don't decide any of this. The problem with our league is the coaches are the ones sitting out front. And we have to sit here and answer this stuff. I think there are two sides to this, I will tell you that, but I don't want to get too involved in it."
This season has been particularly challenging for Antetokounmpo, who has appeared in only 36 games—the fewest of his career—due to multiple ailments, including two calf strains, an adductor strain, and the current knee hyperextension. Despite Coach Rivers' recent statement that Antetokounmpo had not practiced, team sources reveal that the player has been performing his usual pregame routines, intensifying these workouts as a clear demonstration of his readiness to play. With only five regular-season games remaining, the situation remains unresolved and under intense scrutiny.
