Strike Threat Escalates as SSANU Rejects 30% Pay Offer

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universitieshas rejected the Federal Government’s proposed 30% pay rise, warning that an indefinite nationwide strike may begin if negotiations are not concluded by April 30.
Following its NEC meeting in Abuja, the union stressed that talks remain ongoing despite multiple meetings since October 2024, accusing authorities of prematurely presenting the process as concluded.
SSANU described the circulation of a letter suggesting presidential approval of the pay increase as a violation of collective bargaining, insisting no final agreement has been reached.
President Mohammed Ibrahim stated the union would “not accept any outcome that falls below negotiated understanding,” emphasizing the need for fairness, due process, and respect for established negotiation frameworks.
The union, alongside Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions under the Joint Action Committee, has issued a firm ultimatum, threatening “indefinite, comprehensive, and total industrial action” across tertiary institutions.
Ibrahim spoke about the critical role of non-academic staff in admissions, results processing, and student mobilization, warning that failure to meet demands could severely disrupt Nigeria’s higher education system.
