National Farmers' Day Frenzy: Volta Region Readies to Host, ADB & Japan Motors Fuel Festivities!

Ghana hosted its 41st National Farmers' Day celebration from December 1 to December 5, 2025, with the main national event held in Ho, Volta Region. This annual celebration, themed “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” served as a pivotal moment to honor the nation's hardworking farmers and fisherfolk while reinforcing the government’s commitment to positioning agriculture as the primary engine for economic revival and national food security.

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration views agriculture not merely as a support sector, but as the core driver of Ghana’s economic resetting agenda. This strategy is anchored on three critical pillars: productivity, innovation, and resilience. Mr. Gunu highlighted the Volta Region’s remarkable contribution as a national powerhouse in food production, leading in rice cultivation, aquaculture, cassava processing, vegetable farming, and animal husbandry. This success is central to the broader Volta Economic Corridor initiative, an ambitious project designed to transform agriculture, agro-processing, logistics, and export capacity, ultimately reshaping the agricultural landscape and generating new opportunities nationwide.

The Agricultural Development Bank PLC (ADB) was a prominent sponsor of the celebration, hosting its annual National Farmers’ Cocktail on Monday, December 1, 2025, in Ho. The event welcomed and honored the National Best Farmers and Fishers who excelled across various categories. Professor Ferdinand Ahiakpor, Deputy Managing Director of ADB, speaking on behalf of the bank’s Managing Director, congratulated the nominees and reaffirmed the bank’s unwavering support for national efforts toward food security. He reiterated ADB’s commitment to scaling investments in climate-resilient agriculture, agro-industrial supply chains, and youth employment within the sector.
ADB’s sponsorship package included the ultimate prize of GHS 1.2 million for the National Best Farmer, GH¢200,000 for the National Best Fisher, and GH¢50,000 for the Best Second Cycle School in Practical Agriculture. The bank also sponsors the National Farmers’ Day Forum and the Welcome Cocktail, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to its founding mandate of supporting the agricultural sector.

Japan Motors Trading Company Ltd. (JMTC) also demonstrated strong support by donating essential equipment to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD). Echoing the event’s theme, Japan Motors presented MoFA with two YAMAHA motorcycles and two Yamaha generators to strengthen field operations and monitoring, key components of national food security. MoFAD received one YAMAHA motorcycle, a Yamaha 40HP outboard motor, and a Yamaha water pump, all intended to enhance coastal operations and community outreach.
Mr. Abdul-Somad Alhassan Musah, Assistant Managing Director of Japan Motors, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, fisheries development, and improved national livelihoods, emphasizing the firm’s long and productive partnership with both ministries.

The celebration also spotlighted challenges facing the fisheries and aquaculture sector, which Minister Emelia Arthur, represented by Chief Director Marian Kpakpa, described as a cornerstone of Ghana’s food system, supplying nearly 60% of the animal protein consumed by Ghanaians. Despite rising operational costs, climate change impacts, and significant post-harvest losses, the resilience of fisherfolk was highly commended. In response, the government has initiated comprehensive reforms, including strengthening the Fisheries Management Act, expanding designated aquaculture zones, improving premixed fuel governance, and investing in modern landing site infrastructure.

Paramount Chief of the Battor Traditional Area, Togbega Patamia Dzekle VII, issued a timely call for robust mechanisms to prevent environmental degradation, stressing that sustainable practices are essential for safeguarding long-term food security. This aligns with the government’s commitment to climate-smart agriculture and responsible stewardship of natural resources.

Overall, the 41st National Farmers' Day celebration served as a vital platform for collaboration and networking, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, financiers, and farmers—united in the shared mission of securing Ghana’s food future and driving national economic transformation.
