Namibia Soars to Space Elite: New Chinese-Funded Satellite Station Launched in Windhoek
Namibia has officially received a significant China-aided satellite ground data-receiving station, located at the Telecom earth station in Windhoek. The handover ceremony, which took place on Thursday, marked a major milestone for the nation's scientific and technological advancement. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, whose remarks were delivered by Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare at the event, emphasized the facility's crucial role in fostering science, technology, and innovation within the country.
According to President Nandi-Ndaitwah, this state-of-the-art satellite ground station represents a tangible step towards achieving Namibia's national development objectives and its long-term industrialization agenda. She extended profound gratitude to the People's Republic of China for its financial support and construction efforts, highlighting that this generous gesture further strengthens the bilateral relations between Namibia and China.
The new facility enables Namibia to join an exclusive group of African nations that possess modern ground stations capable of receiving real-time satellite data. This enhanced capability is expected to have far-reaching benefits, particularly in areas such as environmental sustainability, resource management, and socio-economic transformation. The President specifically noted that the station will significantly boost Namibia's capacity to efficiently respond to and manage the impacts of climate change, including addressing challenges like drought, water scarcity, flood management, and promoting sustainable water resource utilization.
In anticipation of expanded space activities, President Nandi-Ndaitwah also revealed that the Cabinet has authorized the drafting of a comprehensive space science and technology bill. This legislation aims to establish a robust legal and institutional framework for regulating space activities in Namibia, ensuring strict compliance with international treaties and standards. Furthermore, the nation's Sixth National Development Plan explicitly recognizes space science as a practical and vital engine for driving national development.
